#Searching for #SilverLake: the #radical #neighborhood that changed #gay #America.
Where is the #plaque?” Palencia asks. “The plaque was right here.” The plaque #commemorated the #MattachineSociety, one of the first #US “#homophile” #groups to openly #advocate for #acceptance. “It’s erasure. Erasure of our #history,” Palencia says. “This is where it all began, at least in modern times.”

One of my favorite Key and Peele skits is the one where the overtly gay guy is trying to imply his cube mate is a homophobe … and then find outs that his cube mate is also gay, just not over the top.
I find it funny because as gays, those two individuals are parts of our voyage of self-discovery and finding our true self.

Today would have been the 93rd birthday of pioneering gay activist Kay Tobin Lahusen (1930–2021), a prolific photographer who documented the Homophile and Gay Liberation movements in Philadelphia, Washington, and New York City.
Besides her work with organizations such as the Daughters of Bilitis (alongside her partner of 46 years, Barbara Gittings), Kay was a photojournalist in the 1970s with the NYC-based newspaper GAY.
Hundreds of her pictures can be viewed on the website of the New York Public Library: https://digitalcollections.nypl.org/search/index?utf8=%E2%9C%93&keywords=Kay+Lahusen#/?scroll=23
