-- David HoggAs members of the youth-led gun control movement born out of the countryโs deadliest high school mass shooting โ the 2018 shooting in which 17 people were killed in #Parkland, Florida โ #Hogg and #Bosley represent thousands of young Americans demanding change.
โWhatโs happened is obviously heartbreaking, but at the same time, extremely frustrating,โ 23-year-old Hogg said.
In 2018, Hogg survived the Parkland shooting and went on to co-lead the pro-gun control ๐๐ปMarch for Our Lives ๐๐ปrally, one of the largest youth-led demonstrations since the Vietnam war.โWe had one person, a couple decades ago, try to bomb a plane with a shoe bomb and ever since, weโve had to take our shoes off,โ said Hogg, referring to Richard Reid, the 2001 โshoe bomberโ. โWeโve had thousands of people die of gun violence and weโve basically done nothing at the federal level to substantially address it,โ he said.
Responding to Maineโs Democratic congressman #Jared #Golden, who reversed his opposition to assault rifle bans after the shooting, Hogg said: โFar too often, we see politicians after these shootings on the left and right only come around to actually caring or saying โI should have done moreโ after members of their own community have been killed.โ
โWhat happened in Maine is horrible, but what happened in Maine in the form of individual shootings happens ๐ธevery day ๐ธin this country and even more with the total number of people that were killed,โ said Hogg.
โThere are other Democrats out there who are in a similar position right now. ๐I would urge that representative to go and push those other Democrats to be better on the issue before this happens in their community,โ he added.
