  1. Heavily masking autism isn’t a success.

It’s not an “autism cure” (there’s no such thing), and it’s not a compliment when people say “oh, I couldn’t tell that you’re autistic.” It’s a sign that I am fighting my own nature.

  2. The left side of the brain has a self-reinforcing spiral of anxiety.

The right side of the brain has a self-reinforcing spiral of creativity.

  3. I’ve been going down the rabbit hole of alternative, customizable, computer peripherals. It’s turned into a huge un-ableizing my work project. Is that a word?

Well, I’m no longer content to use the standard options and think myself insufficient for having fingers and eyeballs and a brain that hurts with overuse of badly designed devices.

  4. If you want some resources on Autistic unmasking, here's something I wrote a while back on how to unmask:

And I gave a workshop recently on unmasking: what it is/isn't, how to start, and mostly strategies for staying safe and how to tell what is safe and what's not.

You can get the recording and transcript here if you're interested (it's totally free):

  5. It's okay if you still have a long way to go in your unmasking journey.

We're each starting from different points, at different times in our lives, with different resources, supports, abilities, needs. There is no real timeline or comparison.

  6. You might be #AutisticMasking if you didn’t realize how many sensory sensitivities or sensory needs you have until you started questioning whether you’re autistic.

  7. If you couldn't/didn't come to my unmasking workshop live yesterday, and would like to see it, here’s the link to the recording, along with the full transcript.

I hope you find a couple things that are useful for you. Not everything will resonate, and that’s good! It’s also good to know what doesn’t apply to you (now or ever)! Listening to yourself more is the point of unmasking, right?

  8. You might be #AutisticMasking if you can’t figure out how to break into a conversation “naturally,” and can’t stand interrupting, so never bring up your very important point.

  9. #AutisticMasking makes autism a sort of ‘friendly disability,’ where I suffer so my friend (etc.) doesn’t have to. I go out of my way to be “not a problem,” so others aren’t inconvenienced. It’s exhausting.

  10. You might be #AutisticMasking if routine emails cause significant worry, checking and rechecking, fretting over word choice and grammar, how it might be read, procrastination, and dread.

  11. You might be #AutisticMasking if a technician comes to your home, at your request, to fix sth you want fixed, and you chatter politely while forcing yourself not to yell at them to get out.

  12. You might be #AutisticMasking if you say how much you’re looking forward to the holiday get-together while silently planning last minute cancellation excuses (which you may or may not use).

  13. You might be #AutisticMasking if you felt it wasn’t okay to be, act, or talk your natural way while growing up. Masking is a protective strategy, and sometimes it is/was exactly what you need.

  14. You might be #AutisticMasking if you often pay attention to your own facial expressions and body language to make them look “right” for the given circumstance.

  15. You might be #AutisticMasking if you’re walking down the street and mentally measure how far you are from a stranger you’re passing to gauge when to smile and nod politely and look disinterested again.

  16. The most common questions I get (after #AutisticBurnout) are about  #Autistic #Unmasking.

So I've put together a concentrated version of my philosophy around this sticky topic.

    It's next week, free (really),

  17. You might be #AutisticMasking if you can hyperfocus and be super productive some days, and other days absolutely nothing gets done, and either way you apologize.
