I am not a virologist, but this paper seems to explain why HCQ, the stuff the Trumpers liked so much somehow, showed promise in lab cells, but not in humans. https://journals.plos.org/plospathogens/article?id=10.1371/journal.ppat.1009212
There are 2 ways SARS-2 can get into the cell. HCQ only inhibits one of them. In the lab sometimes cells were used where only the HCQ path was available and HCQ thus worked.
One could combine #HCQ with an inhibitor of the other pathway. Such trials were planned in Germany, but never executed for lack of funding.
