Live and recent posts from across the Fediverse tagged #gugal, aggregated by home.social.

  1. Google has announced that it's shutting down the Custom Search JSON API in 2027 (programmablesearchengine.googl), and new users can no longer sign up.

This effectively breaks Gugal's support for Google searches for those that haven't set it up yet, and those who have (or at least have the required CSE ID and API key) may continue using it until January 1, 2027.

With this in mind, I want to ask Gugal users: which search engine do you use in the app?

  6. Gugal 0.9 is finally out, bringing many new features.

    Download from GitLab: gitlab.com/gugal/releases/-/ra
F-Droid version and a proper release will be available later.

  7. Unfortunately, Gugal 0.9 will launch without Stract support, because Stract seems to have experienced a slowdown leading to search failing and errors in Gugal. The source code for Stract support will still be published, but it won't be enabled.

  8. PSA to Gugal 0.9 preview users: if you want to make an encrypted backup of your settings, please make a regular backup and encrypt that file, as the locked backups are unrecoverable!

This issue will be fixed in 0.9.p2, but that version won't be able to restore locked backups made in 0.9.p1.

  9. After an unforeseen delay (sorry!), Gugal 0.8.4, featuring improved SearX support, is now available on GitLab, and will soon be available on F-Droid.

    Download now: gitlab.com/narektor/gugal/-/re

  10. The wait is (almost) over: Gugal 0.9's first preview version is out!

    This update brings features like:
    - Support for Stract, an independent search engine,
    - An option to move the search bar to the bottom,
    - A warning for when there is no Internet,
    - Support for HTTP authentication in SearX,
    - An experimental backup feature,
    - and many more!

Download today at gugal.gitlab.io/preview. Note that preview versions aren't as stable as regular versions.

  11. The fix will come in Gugal 0.8.4.

The changelogs will be up soon, and the version itself will be released in about a week to give translators time to translate a string that was added in this version.

Note that, due to limitations in SearXNG, the rate limits won't be removed entirely. However, Gugal won't be instantly rate limited, and instances won't be marked as "unsupported".

  12. I'm aware of issues when using Gugal with the latest version of SearXNG. It seems that this is because Gugal's requests are incorrectly being recognized as bot requests. A fix will come later as a minor update to 0.8.

  13. I want to replace the last screen in the Gugal setup menu with a screen that also showcases features like News. This is a mockup of that screen.

Before implementing it, I want to see what Gugal users think. A poll will be in the first reply to this post.

  14. In what has become a yearly tradition, I'm giving you a present for the upcoming holidays - this time, it's Gugal 0.8.3.

This is a minor update that brings stability updates, as well as an improved widget. Additionally, Gugal has been translated into Tamil.

The update is available now on GitLab, and will soon be available on F-Droid.

  15. Do you use a simple version of Gugal?

If you're unaware, these versions lack settings and News, offering only search (see the screenshot in the first reply). They were introduced in 0.7, and have to be built from source as the only officially available simple builds were that of Gugal 0.7 itself and of its first preview.

  16. Gugal 0.8.2 has been re-uploaded. You can find the new release here: gitlab.com/narektor/gugal/-/re

  31. Heads up to developers of search engine support for Gugal - Material3* classes will be removed in the upcoming 0.8.2 update instead of 0.9. Please switch to equivalents in the com.porg.m3 package, which have the same functionality but with a Compose-style syntax.

  32. Since it looks like there is interest in support for Stract in Gugal I posted an issue to its GitLab repository: gitlab.com/narektor/gugal/issu

  33. I have recently come across Stract (stract.com), an open source search engine with its own index. One of its stand-out features are filters, called optics, which customize search results by removing or boosting certain sites.

Seeing as it's fully open source, I thought that it would be good to have support for it in Gugal. But before adding it, I decided to ask if people want it to be added.

So, do you want Stract to be supported in Gugal?

  34. Gugal 0.8.1 has been released on GitLab, with a fix for News (preview) settings as well as other minor parts of the app. The update should arrive on F-Droid soon.

    Download it here: gitlab.com/narektor/gugal/-/re

  35. I just found out that there is an issue with Gugal 0.8's News (preview) settings where the settings sometimes won't save. A fix has been made and will arrive in 0.8.1.

  36. Meet Gugal 0.8, which adds a major new feature to the search app (a thread).

Now available on GitLab, coming soon to F-Droid.

  37. Doing some final testing for News, an upcoming RSS reader feature in Gugal 0.8, on tablets.

(And I definitely didn't pick the best headline for the demo)

  38. Heads up if you're developing SERP providers for - I've published a few guidelines for making good providers.

  39. Tried out Compose Multiplatform - this is Gugal's about page running, with a few changes, on Windows. The source code will be up on GitLab soon.

  40. The first Gugal 0.8 preview is out, featuring reworked animations.

You can try it out now at gugal.gitlab.io/preview.html, or see the updated animations here.

  41. releases on GitLab should be available again - sorry for making them private by accident.

  42. Just released 0.7.1. This is a minor release improving launcher support.

I expect to release the first 0.8 preview builds soon.
