  2. Back in the day, we had #deleteFacebook, #deleteMeta, #deleteWhatsApp, and so on.

    Some people heeded the call for a while, only to quietly return to Big Tech later on.

    Now, many have been jolted awake by our dependence on Big Tech, and another #quitday and other variations are gaining momentum.

    Personally, I started that journey years ago.

    I’m sure I’m forgetting a few, but there’s a European and open-source alternative for every American Big Tech and closed-source application.

    What I’ve noticed is that many people are afraid of what they don’t know and therefore don’t dare to make the switch (completely).
    (Some people just don’t give a damn and convenience is all that matters)

    Any fear is unfounded, and if all of us switches en masse, Big Tech’s power will be quickly broken, and the development of alternatives will proceed much more smoothly and quickly.

  8. Luke Smith breaks down Searx — a privacy-first, open-source metasearch that pulls results without your machine talking to big engines. 9. New docker release of #decentralized #p2p search engine YaCy arrived. yacy.net
    A better alternative to duckduckgo #searx .
    new images are now about 400MB instead of 1.3-2GB because of enhanced packaging. And they are multi-arch!
    With docker you can run YaCy simply with:
    docker run -d -p 8090:8090 yacy/yacy_search_server:latest

    P2P technologies and P2P search engines are more sustainable and fault-tolerant than centralized cloud or VPS-based systems because they distribute data and processing across many independent nodes rather than relying on a single or limited set of servers. This decentralization reduces energy consumption by leveraging existing resources on users' devices instead of massive data centers that require constant cooling and power. It also enhances fault tolerance, as the network remains operational even if multiple nodes fail, avoiding single points of failure common in centralized models. Furthermore, P2P search engines protect privacy by reducing reliance on centralized data collection. By democratically sharing load and data, P2P systems create resilient, scalable, and eco-friendly alternatives to traditional centralized architectures.

    alternative classic search engines swisscows.com/en kagi.com frogfind.com
    alternative p2p tech to try that provide p2p distributed search capabilities : dc++ , gnutella2 , zeronet , holochain

    If you do self host YaCy, or maybe use fancy non bittorrent p2p & publish a video review on peertube - let me know.

    5. Uberhaupt geen Windows OS, maar Linux.

    6. Geen Zoom maar Jitsi.

    7. Geen Whatsapp maar Threema en Signal.

    8. Geen Iphone of reguliere Android telefoon, maar een ont-Googelde Volla Phone.

  12. @kainoa Good points but clarification needed. “Scrapes” is the wrong term. #DDG is a paying syndicate of Microsoft Bing.

    _Scraping_ is what the smaller #searx / #4get instances do, which is a good thing in the sense that scraping avoids supporting the tech giant baddies they scrape from.

  13. @strypey @zeh @alcinnz

    Indeed mojeek.com is not the only non-tech-giant #searchEngine (+crawler). From strypey’s mentions + some of my notes:

    * #Mojeek ← does their own crawling
    * #Metager.org ← does their own crawling
    * #SearchMySite.net ← avoid (Cloudflare)
    * #Searx ← just proxy software, many instances
    * #4get ← another proxy software, about a dozen instances: 4get.ca/instances
    * #Gigablast ← does their own crawling, but what happened?.. they were dissolved last year & seem to now be www.alltheinternet.com
    * #Ombrelo ← a proxy but more advanced than the others (filters/downranks Cloudflare sites)

    #YaCy is notable because it’s a crawler that you can install and operate yourself. YaCy instances can be public-facing and they can also share indexes with each other fedi style apparently. Some Searx instances tap YaCy instances.

    I would love to find a searx or 4get instance that rejects the tech giants, but aggregates from YaCy, mojeek, gigablast, metager, maginalia.nu, frogfind.com, & wiby.me.

    And I would love it even more if it would make replacements:

    * #StackExchange#AnonymousOverflow
    * #YouTube#Invideous
    * #Medium.com → scribe.rip
    * #BBC → BBC’s onion site
    * #NYTimes → New York Times’s onion site
    * etc.

    search.fabiomanganiello.com makes some of those replacements.

  16. 2/2

    …use permanent marker to suggest #freedomSoftware (#searx, fediverse). You can wear them when out in public or adorn your vehicle in them (hint: get used to visiting different places) (see # reclaimTheOpenWeb)

    c) offer people #freeStuff (things you'd place on #gumtree) by accessing your #I2P website,

    d) talk about #bitcoin with people who have a head on their shoulders.

    Do you have another protest method?

  17. @usul
    Unfortunately, #Firefox talks to Amazon, Cloudflare and Google, even when you harden it. That's why we recommend people to use Tor for the legacy internet.

    Searx proxies over #TorBrowser takes the cake.

    Bookmark as many #Searx proxies (that are not #Cloudflare) as you can.

    Find a list of searx proxies at searx.space (requires JavaScript). More advanced users can find a raw proxy list here:
    searx.space/data/instances.jso

    Consider LibreWolf or Icecat for #I2P and #eepsites.

  18. @adinfinitum
    If only we could help people to forget Amazon, Google and Facebook. *wink*

    Seriously though, if a person is using Tor, those listings should all be crossed out with a #strikethrough <del> element.

    Maybe something to build into #Tor?

    An addon perhaps.

    Hmm.

    Add a hosts file to a browser. How did we not think of this sooner?

    #Etherpad - il word processor collaborativo: etherpad.devol.it

    #Searx - il motore di ricerca: searx.devol.it

    #lstu Let's Short That Url per accorciare i link: s.devol.it

    #OpenSondage per creare sondaggi online: opensondage.devol.it

  20. Upgraded #Searx to use #uWSGI. MUCH snappier now. Writeup forthcoming.

  21. @kuketzblog
    Kleiner Tipp:
#Arial
    #searx
