My dog, #Gruoch, normally travels in the special doggie compartment at the back of the Ford Grand Tourneo. However, on an occasional basis she will travel in the front passenger seat when I'm driving one of the company vans. In that seat she sits upright, and also leans into corners. I've noticed that she anticipates the direction of lean *before* we get to the corner.

  2. Gross dog problem.

After we returned from the #DogWalk, I noticed #Gruoch was spending a lot of time licking one of her front paws.

It wasn't until much later, when I found the mutilated remains of a slug on the kitchen floor, that I realised what happened. Gruoch had managed to get a slug wedged between the pads of her paw. Her only means to get it out was with her tongue. 🤮

  3. What do we get when the "rest" of Europe is sweltering under a heatwave? To-day, it was 10°C, ferocious winds, and SLEET. Yup! Sleet at the end of July.

Thank goodness I'd anticipated inclement weather for the #DogWalk, and donned my full waterproofs. Poor #Gruoch wasn't dressed as appropriately.

  4. Happy Gotcha Day to #Gruoch.

I've had Gruoch for 5 years. Every day I'm glad that I found her.

  5. The weather to-day was perfect for a #DogWalk. It hadn't yet got very hot (yesterday was a max of 30°C), there was a cooling on-shore breeze (therefore no midgies), and a cloudless blue sky with loads of sunshine. #Gruoch got to paddle in the waters of the shallow bay. I got to admire the scenery.

Who cares about bloody football? 😃

  6. Through the years #Gruoch frequently photobombs my images, because she is always with me. It always makes me smile when I see she has wandered into a shot. 😃

The Bubba Gump photo was one such example.

  7. The thought about "Monarch of the Glen" came about because I found my first discarded Red Deer antler of the season. I'm hoping to find lots more in the coming weeks. I cut the antlers into shorter sections to make dog chews for #Gruoch. She loves chewing antlers, and they are great for her teeth.

  8. On yesterday evening's #DogWalk we encountered lots of deer, some Reds and some Sika. The group in the photo were the nearest to us. Apart from lifting their heads, to look at us, the deer stood motionless.

#Gruoch knew the deer were somewhere, she could smell them. However, even though she looked towards them, she didn't perceive them as deer because they didn't move.

Dogs, and presumably wolves, perceive movement not static shapes.

  9. It is now officially Spring, as #Gruoch just got her first tick of 2026. I noticed the tick crawling about her, and removed it before it had time to attach.

I'm now expecting an explosion in tick numbers in the next week or so. :ablobgrimace:

  10. On yesterday's #DogWalk I came across this Crown Gall on a Silver Birch tree. These galls are tumours in the tree caused by infection from the bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Although, I've read these tumours are benign, I wonder if it restricts the flow of water and nutrients in this tree's main trunk.

Yes, that is #Gruoch showing complete disinterest in my arboreal investigations.

  11. To-day I met a Miniature Dachshund. He was a 5-month old puppy. He was absolutely tiny. Most remarkably, he was called Elvis. #Gruoch thought he was a Hound Dog. He didn't bark which meant Treat Me Nice. Gruoch looked Way Down on him. :blob_laughing:

  12. During my recent project of removing the rhododendrons from around the house, I came across this old bird's nest. I was delighted to see the birds had used Gruoch's discarded fur to line the nest. This was particularly pleasing as I had intentionally put out clumps of fur for this reason.

If you have a shedding dog you should do the same in the late winter and early spring.

  13. When posting the photo of Gruoch I realised I haven't updated the website galleries for a while. I have now amended that situation by creating a new gallery:

  14. #Gruoch is a rescue dog. I don't know her birthday. Instead of celebrating her birthday I mark the anniversary of the day I first got her. I know lots of other people with rescue dogs who celebrate their own Gotcha Day.

  15. I have the main ingredients ready for celebrating Gruoch's Gotcha Day,: steaks and cream. Steak followed by whipped cream is one of her favourites.

#Gruoch and I have been together for four years. Getting her is one of the best decisions I ever made.

  16. I haven't been able to get Gruoch's favourite chicken jerky treats for a few weeks. I bought a packet of chicken feet (pictured), which seem to be an equally natural product. I hope she likes them.

  17. #Gruoch has a soft kennel in the house. She sometimes lies lengthways in the kenmel, which means her paws protrude out underneath the mesh doorway. It looks so cute.

  18. Sheep worrying.

No-one has explained to #Gruoch that her breed (Akbash) were meant to protect sheep. She thinks sheep would be very, very tasty.

  19. Does anyone else have the concept of "clean muck"?

I saw #Gruoch lying on a patch of exposed ground. She had lots of bits of earth, small stones, sticks, beech nuts and leaves on her fur. I thought to myself, it is OK, it is clean muck.

In general, clean muck is anything natural. Man-made dirt is never clean muck.

Clean muck is a concept inherited from my family.

  20. The weather this March has been unbelievably good, and just keeps going. #Gruoch is enjoying the sunshine, too.

The pessimist in me can't help thinking "we'll pay for this later". 😃

  21. This period of snowmageddon has had an unexpected consequence. Lots of deer have been congregating around the house, desperately searching for things to eat. Additionally, the snow and bright moonlight means they are easily visible, day or night.

Gruoch is going crazy. She "likes" deer at the best of times. Having so many deer just the other side of the windows is too much to bear. My usual quiet dog is barking all the time.

  22. Rescuing a dog is straightforward, and is tremendously rewarding. I know from personal experience. #Gruoch, my dog, is a rescue dog. I've had her for 3.5 years.

Getting Gruoch is one of the best decisions I ever made.
