Anyone here have experience with any GL.inet products? How is the experience supporting/using something like the Beryl travel router as a home wireless router? Is the custom OpenWRT OS worth using or is it better to flash stock OpenWRT on it?

Anyone running a #GLInet router? I've been running #ddwrt on a netgear for a long time. I thought about switching to #openwrt, gave it a try, and it went poorly.
Now we have gigabit fiber AND router buys are going to get dicey in the US in the future. I'm considering getting a #Flint3 even though we're OK now because it may be impossible to get here in a year.
Anyone have thoughts about the line and / or experience with them?

@blindcoder Just looked up the #DNS ad blocking landscape last night.
Seems like #PiHole is slowly coming out of fashion and more seen as the "simple beginner's tool". #AdGuard is what most people seem to use nowadays. (That's also what's integrated into #GLiNet routers!) And the real geeks apparently use #Technitium (.NET!).
Some pay for #NextDNS.io as they don't want to host "such essential service" themselves. Also, you can use it from everywhere without the need for VPN tunnels or open ports into your home for DoH/DoT.
And #Blocky got honorary mentions from some masochists.

I’ve been looking for a project router for our travels, so we can ditch #WiFi provided by hosts and bring our own.
I was hoping #UniFi #TravelRouter would be THE THING, but it’s missing one key feature I’d give my money for - optional simcard slot…
#GliNet still looks far more compelling, because it’s more open and you can just make 5G modem work with it…

Bought a new router (GLi Net Flint 2) which broke my headless Pi SSH connection. Took me a while to realise the Pi doesn't support WPA3. Still working on it... Last night I had to work on the TV as the new router also broke the wifi remote control (IR receiver is broken) connection... Found out that using a keyboard with an Android TV is very unintuitive (it's a Sony Bravia).
Ah... networking. Every time I learn a little bit more!

GL-iNet silently changed shipment dates for their Mudi 7 router preorders. What a shame.

shit, I just realized Trump's #RouterBan presumably includes #GLiNet products.

Dear fedi, I’m thinking on replacing some #networking hardware at my place. I need an #AccessPoint and another piece working as a #WiFi6 client for 2 PCs and a SteamLink, no need for mesh.
Considering
• GL.iNet Flint 2 for the AP,
• #Mikrotik hAP ax² for the client.Does this look OK? Other options worth considering? I like that #GLiNet uses #OpenWRT.

Received today my new toy 🤩
A nice GL.iNet Flint 2 (GL-MT6000)I haven't decided yet whether I'll stay with the stock/stable firmware from GL.iNet (based on OpenWrt 21.02-SNAPSHOT :v), Or switch to the one based on OpenWrt 24... Or go to the Vanilla OpenWrt firmware.
(I'm open to suggestions)But so far... WiFi is at least 10x faster with a quick test compared to my ISP box :o
Time to do some proper testing... And then plug internet directly to it :D

Beryl 7 (dual-band WiFi 7 travel router) is also now available, which claims ~1Gbps Wireguard and OpenVPN performance, with a MediaTek CPU:
https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-mt3600be/
while it looks like Beryl 7 will launch with firmware based on a proprietary SDK based on OpenWrt 21.02, the fact that it's a MediaTek CPU and based on prior history with #GLiNet, the case is promising for future support for a version of GLi's firmware based on recent OpenWrt, and eventual mainline #OpenWrt support.
for what it's worth, WiFi 7 support on OpenWrt isn't exactly fully baked yet with other hardware either.
I'm very interested in this one, as I use Beryl AX freqeuently while traveling and it works well. I just wish Beryl 7 was tri-band... and available in other colors.

GL.iNet Mudi 7 specs are out and it's now available for pre-order ($319, down from a $399 price target for general release), to ship in April.
https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-e5800/
noteworthy details:
* 5G and 4G, 6x internal and optional 2x external antennas
* dual SIM support
* tri-band WiFi 7, 1x 2.5GbE port
* 600Mbps Wireguard and 700Mbps OpenVPN
* USB type-C tethering and OTG
* quad-core Qualcomm CPU
* 2GB RAM and 8GB eMMC
* up to 13.5h battery life and USB-PD fast chargegiven that it's a Qualcomm CPU I would not expect mainline OpenWrt support any time real soon, but it will be running GL.iNet's build of OpenWrt + their software, and should have access to most packages available on vanilla OpenWrt.
based on my experiences with #GLiNet I would wait for the firmware to stabilize before buying this, with the expectation that increasing competition in the travel router space will push that $399 price target down over time.

scuttlebutt on the #GLiNet Mudi 7 tri-band 5G travel router is that they are trying to launch it by the end of first quarter and it may launch at a price of about $370
that's too expensive for me, but their firmwares tend to be rough at first release, so I'm comfortable waiting a while before worrying about upgrading my old Spitz v2 ... I don't use these cellular devices a lot (though Mudi 7 having a battery could change that) but when I need them, I really need them, so it's that kind of a thing.
some more info:
Weight 300g
Dimensions 157 x 75 x 22.8 mm
claimed 8 hour battery life
4x4 5G downlink MIMO
500Mbps Wireguard
2x optional external 5G antenna -
it's frustrating being so cash-poor but it is what it is, at this point I'm hardware-rich in the server department... I have plenty of capacity for Proxmox and thus I'm looking to bolster my personal computing capacity ... I finally just got a replacement battery and a keyboard for my Thinkpad, and when I do get a NanoPi M6 that'll become the ultimate fallback if the laptop breaks or is stolen, etc.
my other planned tech purchases for 2026 are a #GLiNet Mudi 7 (after it's released) mobile 5G hotspot and an Android phone which actually talks to US cell carriers, unlike my current 5yo Poco F1 which became a wifi-only device when the 3G networks were shut down here.

🙈 #FediFlohmarkt #glinet
