  1. Because some delivery services even deliver on Sundays (!?), a new USB charger I had ordered on AliExpress arrived today, and I immediately set it up in my little network corner.

Most of these devices can actually be powered via USB PD, so long as you get an appropriate USB-to-barrel cable. So now every single device —other than my NAS, not pictured— are powered by this USB charger. No need for the various power bricks each device came with. Neat!

  2. I’ve always enjoyed making my own network cables. Wouldn’t be able to do it every day at work like my datacenter days, but it can be rewarding. #homenetwork

  3. Now I wish I had two tall ladders so I didn’t have to go up and down the stairs running the cable. #homenetwork

  4. I had a little bit of extra conduit when we built the house and I put an extra run to the attic space above the garage. Turned out to be super useful. Fish taped to the basement in one shot without having to even crawl up there. I haven’t had to use the other three basement to attic runs yet but happy to know they are there. #homenetwork

  5. Ok, geeked again now that some Aliexpress parts arrived.

Have added a 10Gb SFP in the Lenovo P330 that's my Ubuntu Server Homelab. It was easier to go straight to SPF using a PCIe riser card; then mess around with 2.5Gb ethernet in this device. The fact my office switch had a 10Gb SFP port unused... it made me say why not :)

Now to have fun learning and documenting using a Bonding interface, to make the SFP primary, with the ethernet as backup.

  6. Ok, two days of computer touching complete, and now a critical part of my home network - my AdGuard Home server - is migrated onto my new Homelab machine.

    Swapped the RPi 4b 4Gb RAM with SSD; to a Lenovo ThinkStation running an i7-8700 @ 3.20GHz, 256Gb SSD, 16Gb DDR4 RAM.

AdGuard's Docker container has been setup to be (virtually) bulletproof; and firewall rules blocking DNS resolution with anything but it (once I split a 67k list entry on UniFi).

  7. 🎉 Oh, joy! Let's dive into the thrilling world of multicast TV on a home network, because who wouldn't want their packets delivered like a broken record? 🎬 Apparently, authoring a technology guide with the finesse of a drunk octopus is the new rage, where even backwards routing tables have more direction than this article. 🐙🔄

  8. And my #Adguard and #Unifi environment is back to stable; backed up and ready for another foray into a solid #IPv6 setup, with my Telstra modem moving back to bridge mode.

Have just sat down and laid out all my requirements to make sure this is done right... and it's a doozy of a list.

56 items to make sure it's solid as a rock, and there's zero chance for anything to get past my Adguard DNS resolver unless I expressly permit it.

  9. Anyone here have experience with any GL.inet products? How is the experience supporting/using something like the Beryl travel router as a home wireless router? Is the custom OpenWRT OS worth using or is it better to flash stock OpenWRT on it?

  10. With some help from @rosenclosed (who did all the work) we now have an immich.app server running in our house net. It's pretty awesome. Since the old laptop I purchased to act as the host server isn't very strong, we bolstered the facial detection by spinning up a docker on my desktop during the bulk import. Now everything is running fairly smoothly on the laptop.

  11. You know, I let thoughts bounce around my head for as long as they want. Sure, it sounds like a ping-pong ball in an empty coffee can, but now and then a bit of brilliance pops up.

So, this thought is about smart appliances, specifically smart washer and dryer. For the longest time I've been against these, I mean why do you need your washer and/or dryer on the internet?
While I'll still agree with it shouldn't be on the internet, I realized that these being smart actually makes sense. I live in a 1500 sq ft split level house, so its about 45 ft from one end of the house to the other. The washer is in the basement at the south end of the house, and the bedroom I'm usually in is in the upper floor at the north end. As you can imagine, I can't hear the washer or dryer end cycle alerts, all I can do is go down and see if'n they're done. Not a big deal, just a nuisance… Unless I were impaired.
For me having an alert show up on my phone when the cycle is done is a nice luxury, but if'n you're impaired, and find it hard to go up and down the stairs? Yeah, that'd be a god send, no? And the crazy thing is internet isn't needed for that, just an app on your phone, a little bit of intelligence in the appliance, and both being on the same network.

Yeah, I could live with that, frankly I don't mind a smart home, so long as the network goes no further than my house, whether some manner of home hub, or just individual apps that can connect so long as they're on the same network.

  13. What’re people using for Mesh home networking these days?

TP Link has gotten progressively worse. Opened the app just now and it caused the system to reboot while Nicole was on a call. Just opened the app.

  14. Just set up a dedicated IoT hotspot on a Raspberry Pi 4 running OpenWrt, and it works great!

OpenWrt is perfect for this: clean routing, full control, no bloat. Added AdGuard DNS to block all the unnecessary (and harmful) telemetry these devices keep sending.

Every home should have one of these 🔒📡

  15. Current mission, recycle, repurpose or recoil! That iMac has a glitchy screen, Logic/MBoard issue? There's maybe a slim chance I could install and run minimal Debian on it for 'something'. Yes, that's a MKI AppleTV you can see. Three laptops and misc hard drives (even an IDE).

  16. OK nerds: if all I need is a local NAS/Jellyfin server, is 2.5Gig ethernet gonna be enough for my local network

  17. You can give your old internet router a fresh start with free software. This free software can make it work better, be safer, and do more things. It's a good way to use your old router for longer.

  18. Hi all, I have been using Cloudflare's family service, 1.1.1.3, on my router to block malware and adult websites on my home network. And it has been very effective so far, but is there anything else that I can do, or try a different setup that might be better? All I want is to protect my kids from accidentally visiting a website they shouldn't be on. Thanks!

  19. Decided to replace one in-wall UTP because one of the strands was broken and the socket only went 100Mbps. It only took an hour of work but now it goes full 0Mbps. Fuck it, I'll put the AP somewhere else.
