  1. With some help from @rosenclosed (who did all the work) we now have an immich.app server running in our house net. It's pretty awesome. Since the old laptop I purchased to act as the host server isn't very strong, we bolstered the facial detection by spinning up a docker on my desktop during the bulk import. Now everything is running fairly smoothly on the laptop.

  6. You know, I let thoughts bounce around my head for as long as they want. Sure, it sounds like a ping-pong ball in an empty coffee can, but now and then a bit of brilliance pops up.

So, this thought is about smart appliances, specifically smart washer and dryer. For the longest time I've been against these, I mean why do you need your washer and/or dryer on the internet?
While I'll still agree with it shouldn't be on the internet, I realized that these being smart actually makes sense. I live in a 1500 sq ft split level house, so its about 45 ft from one end of the house to the other. The washer is in the basement at the south end of the house, and the bedroom I'm usually in is in the upper floor at the north end. As you can imagine, I can't hear the washer or dryer end cycle alerts, all I can do is go down and see if'n they're done. Not a big deal, just a nuisance… Unless I were impaired.
For me having an alert show up on my phone when the cycle is done is a nice luxury, but if'n you're impaired, and find it hard to go up and down the stairs? Yeah, that'd be a god send, no? And the crazy thing is internet isn't needed for that, just an app on your phone, a little bit of intelligence in the appliance, and both being on the same network.

Yeah, I could live with that, frankly I don't mind a smart home, so long as the network goes no further than my house, whether some manner of home hub, or just individual apps that can connect so long as they're on the same network.

TP Link has gotten progressively worse. Opened the app just now and it caused the system to reboot while Nicole was on a call. Just opened the app.

  12. Just set up a dedicated IoT hotspot on a Raspberry Pi 4 running OpenWrt, and it works great!

OpenWrt is perfect for this: clean routing, full control, no bloat. Added AdGuard DNS to block all the unnecessary (and harmful) telemetry these devices keep sending.

Every home should have one of these 🔒📡

  25. Hi all, I have been using Cloudflare's family service, 1.1.1.3, on my router to block malware and adult websites on my home network. And it has been very effective so far, but is there anything else that I can do, or try a different setup that might be better? All I want is to protect my kids from accidentally visiting a website they shouldn't be on. Thanks!

  26. Decided to replace one in-wall UTP because one of the strands was broken and the socket only went 100Mbps. It only took an hour of work but now it goes full 0Mbps. Fuck it, I'll put the AP somewhere else.

All are 8 port unmanaged switches.

33. I'm in a good mood. To save some money, I've decided to change ISP, which will mean dropping from having multiple public IPv4 addresses down to just one. I run my own DNS and mail servers, as well as this #GoToSocial server. As a consequence I've also had to place parts of the mail server behind my http reverse proxy.

To get all this to work I had to:

    - Change the port forwarding/firewall on the router.
    - Change IPv4 and IPv6 addresses in 3 different config files and multiple locations in #Mailcow (which is a dockerised mail server with about 20 individual containers).
    - Change another setting related to the IPv6 address for outgoing emails.
    - Change a setting related to Subject Alternate Names in certificate requests.
    - Add pass-through rules to the web proxy so that Let's Encrypt certificate renewal works.
    - Change public and private DNS records

A lot of testing and googling was required. I tried last weekend and failed, which is why I'm pleased. A lot of things have to line up exactly for a fully valid public mail server that supports IPv6.
