My first #OpenWRT test didn't go well. I've used #DDWRT for years. It's mostly fine. Needs periodic reboots. VLANs aren't stable sometimes.

I tried flashing OpenWRT onto my Nighthawk today. Seemed to mostly work OK. I logged in, got antennas activated. Then weirdness started. From a LAN wired connection, the gaming computer would get 2-5 minutes of uptime, then the whole port shut downs. Restart and it would be OK. Then 2-5 minutes later the port shuts down. Orange light. Full stop.

There's finally fiber Internet near us so we're switching. The dedicated line and symmetric upload will be a huge help for moving files.

I'm considering moving from our router from #DDWRT to #OpenWRT for better #WireGuard support, more frequent updates, maybe better QoS. Any thoughts from users? It's a Netgear Nighthawk which I think is plenty powerful enough and at least acts OK for DDWRT.

i needed ipv6 for accessing my VPS hosted on https://boxybsd.com which is ipv6 only from me and my partner's new apartment so i called up my isp asking for an allocation. at first they told me that they're not ipv6 ready, but i got a call a few minutes after.....

now, I'm working with my isp and apparently i can be a early tester for their network support of ipv6.

apparently they're "almost there" in fully supporting it and want to work with me to test it. haha i'm loving this! i'm like a kid in a candy shop.

Da fängt der Tag schon schlecht an: In der Früh die ersten E-Mails vom Network-Watchdog, dass das #homelab seit 01:30 ohne internetconnection ist. Danke #magenta und dem verdammten #ddwrt, dass sich nach einem Disconnect behände weigert eine neue IP per DHCP zu empfangen. Es ist zum Mäuse melken....

I've been running #ddwrt for years without issue. The router is in the basement and the front ground floor area of the house has a pretty weak signal.

I'm considering updating to a GliNet MT6000 running #OpenWRT in the basement and an AXT1800 running it upstairs with ethernet backhaul.

That should overkill the problem. Then again, most of the network works OK. Is it worth the cost and technical debt of translating current settings on ddwrt to a new firmware.

So here is my new #OPNsense Router.
My old router is a #Linksys WRT3200ACM running #DDWRT & it's blue, so I called it #Tachikoma from #GhostInTheShell.
So went with the same theme here.
I am really happy with it😁.
I'm still getting for feel for OPNsense & where everything is
I've been playing with Suricata & I got Zenarmor installed.

Habe heute Vormittag im Track "#Backup" einen Vortrag "Alles backupen mit Rsnapshot" auf den #clt2025 gehalten. Es ging um das Programm #Rsnapshot und darum, wie man mit Shell Tools oder einfachen #Perl-Skripen u.ä. regelmäßige Backups von Dingen automatisieren kann, die nicht dafür gemacht sind. Beispielsweise #DDWRT und #Fritzbox OS.

Finally replaced the crappy O2 router with a refurbished FritzBox 7490. No network bullshit anymore, unrecognized hostnames etc. anymore. And eventually I can put #ddwrt or #openwrt on it if I so desire.

A decade ago I modified a standard US 110V wall outlet so that it contained a hidden wifi hotspot. Thus, using #ddwrt open source software for routers, I could create a low bandwidth wifi-network that reached the basement of my 6-story building.

I wanted to know when the clothes dryer was done. But, it was more than that—

The other possible solution was to buy a SIM card and make the monitor a cellular device. This (I want to stress) was over a decade ago 2009.

무선 통신도 이제 단순히 기술 규격대로의 라디오 하나만 쏘는 수준이 아니라, 별도의 신호 교환 역할 라디오를 만들어서 호환성을 보조하는 설계도 있고 실제 연결성이 뛰어나다.
오픈 소스 소프트웨어로는 기본 기술 이용 위한 구현도 학습이 필요하고, 기능을 켜고 끄기만 하여도 장애가 잦았으며, 하드웨어 설계를 활용할 방안도 없었다.

Something I pride myself on is that my router usually can stay up until it starts having issues and needs to be rebooted, we lose power, or I reboot it for whatever reason. It having so many issues with Shortcut Forwarding Engine after updating it recently made me sad. This router will have been here for a decade in at least a few months or so and I bought it specifically so I could run DD-WRT. Long uptime isn't inherently good, but it being able to be long makes me feel good.

I think I got the router to stop rebooting by turning off the Shortcut Forwarding Engine. More recent threads in the DD-WRT forums mentioned it was still an issue.

Even though I like DD-WRT, the unreliability of updating it by having to do trial and error with finding good builds and having it still work ok makes me want to just install #OpenWRT instead.

Just saved an older router from becoming e-waste by installing dd-wrt on it, so it could be used in "station mode" (wifi client with NAT and DHCP).

The original firmware didn't have that option. It's wonderful that there's an active community of developers writing open source firmware for devices like this.

A few days ago I was fixing my TP-Link WR740N router.
Connected it to my PC via TTL Serial adapter, soldered the pins on to the board and also wired the CPU(tx) pad and the back to the tx pad of the pins.
Overall the router now runs DDWRT and is revived and ready for daily use.

Ignore the messy desktop. I cleaned it up after that.

Watched a YouTube video about the WRT54G tonight, so of course I had to pull out mine just to look at it, I even had the fancy high gain antennas.

This thingwas the heart of my family's network for many years. I'm tempted to try and boot it up since I know I had some custom firmware loaded on it, I had DDWRT at one point, but I think I switched to something else near the end, was it tomato or something like that?
