Powerful Hardware Turned into E-Waste
What you're looking at is another unfortunate example of perfectly capable hardware becoming electronic waste long before its technical lifespan is over.
This is the AirTies Air 4960, an AX5400 Wi-Fi 6 mesh extender/access point featuring impressive hardware:
* Broadcom BCM6752 triple-core ARM Cortex-A7 SoC (up to 1.5 GHz)
* Broadcom BCM43684 4x4 Wi-Fi 6 radio with 160 MHz channel support
* Dual-band Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax)
* Two Gigabit Ethernet ports
* Around 4.5 W power consumptionFrom a technical perspective, this device is still more than capable of delivering excellent performance in many home and enterprise networking scenarios.
- The Real Issue
The hardware isn't obsolete, the software ecosystem is intentionally locked down.
Many devices like this are heavily restricted by manufacturers or Internet Service Providers (ISPs), preventing owners from repurposing them once official support ends or the service contract expires.
Meanwhile, open-source firmware projects such as OpenWrt, DD-WRT and Tomato have demonstrated for years that networking hardware can remain secure, functional, and useful far beyond its commercial lifecycle.
Unfortunately, locked bootloaders, proprietary firmware, missing documentation, and closed-source drivers often make that impossible.
Sustainability Is Also About Software Freedom
We regularly discuss sustainability, circular economy, and reducing electronic waste.
Yet perfectly functional networking equipment ends up in recycling bins, not because the hardware has failed, but because users are prevented from installing alternative software.
* The hardware already exists.
* The raw materials have already been mined.
* The manufacturing energy has already been spent.In many cases, all that's missing is the freedom to install an alternative operating system.
- A Better Approach
I would like to see manufacturers embrace a more open ecosystem by providing:
* Unlockable bootloaders
* Public hardware documentation
* Support or at least tolerance for open-source firmware
* Longer software support lifecyclesThis would benefit users, enterprises, developers, the open-source community, and ultimately the environment.
Not every retired device is obsolete, many are simply made obsolete through artificial restrictions.

Drat. My #ddwrt #router has been dropping it's 5G wireless band sometimes. Everything else is fine. The 5G wireless network just fully disappears. 2.4G never disappears. Reboot the machine and 5G returns.
It's stopped and been totally fine for some time now. I thought we were past it. Get up this morning: 5G wireless network is gone again. Reboot and it's fine.
I think I just missed a #GliNet sale for a Flint 3. If only it had kept messing up sooner. 😡

Getting pretty annoyed at #ddwrt. Our 5G band keeps dying with no log message. 2.4 main and the 2.4 vnet are both fine. Multiple times this week and totally new behavior. Not on a new version, it's just out of the blue

Anyone running a #GLInet router? I've been running #ddwrt on a netgear for a long time. I thought about switching to #openwrt, gave it a try, and it went poorly.
Now we have gigabit fiber AND router buys are going to get dicey in the US in the future. I'm considering getting a #Flint3 even though we're OK now because it may be impossible to get here in a year.
Anyone have thoughts about the line and / or experience with them?

@nickbearded what is the cheapest alibaba arm device it will run on Netcore N60 Pro MediaTek MT7986A (Quad-core A53)? about 40 bucks, i have a few mango glinet and they are decent. you could also mkt this as a 4g/5g iot testbench. i see this as a way to sell product buy from alibaba in bulk, sell for double. it is a discrete product but also a gateway product #custom fw flashing #ddwrt #openwrt #routing protocols #debian arm

How about jailbreaking existing router with custom firmware, like #openwrt , #DDwrt, or #AsusMerlin? 😉
That's what I am working on ATM

With the news of the US banning all foreign routers (well, all routers for practical purposes), I'm checking how to replace the one from my ISP (which, since I live in CR, is a #Huawei of all brands!). Now I'm down a rabbit hole of #GPON devices, #LC to #SFP adapters, and #DDWRT compatibility lists. -
I had some strong firewall rules on my #ddwrt router blocking icmp requests from wan, blocking port scanners, and tarpitting, and absolutely murdered my throughout. I guess this poor mr8300 can't keep up. XD -
My first #OpenWRT test didn't go well. I've used #DDWRT for years. It's mostly fine. Needs periodic reboots. VLANs aren't stable sometimes.
I tried flashing OpenWRT onto my Nighthawk today. Seemed to mostly work OK. I logged in, got antennas activated. Then weirdness started. From a LAN wired connection, the gaming computer would get 2-5 minutes of uptime, then the whole port shut downs. Restart and it would be OK. Then 2-5 minutes later the port shuts down. Orange light. Full stop.

There's finally fiber Internet near us so we're switching. The dedicated line and symmetric upload will be a huge help for moving files.
I'm considering moving from our router from #DDWRT to #OpenWRT for better #WireGuard support, more frequent updates, maybe better QoS. Any thoughts from users? It's a Netgear Nighthawk which I think is plenty powerful enough and at least acts OK for DDWRT.

i needed ipv6 for accessing my VPS hosted on https://boxybsd.com which is ipv6 only from me and my partner's new apartment so i called up my isp asking for an allocation. at first they told me that they're not ipv6 ready, but i got a call a few minutes after.....
now, I'm working with my isp and apparently i can be a early tester for their network support of ipv6.
apparently they're "almost there" in fully supporting it and want to work with me to test it. haha i'm loving this! i'm like a kid in a candy shop.
glad i made that first call!

Hi!
I'm Italo.
I'm going to build my own OpenWRT by mixing repository full of improvements on top of a fork of OpenWRT that uses NSS for thet Dynalink DL-WRX36 (Qualcomm IPQ8072).
Welcome to Jackass.

I've been running #ddwrt for years without issue. The router is in the basement and the front ground floor area of the house has a pretty weak signal.
I'm considering updating to a GliNet MT6000 running #OpenWRT in the basement and an AXT1800 running it upstairs with ethernet backhaul.
That should overkill the problem. Then again, most of the network works OK. Is it worth the cost and technical debt of translating current settings on ddwrt to a new firmware.

So here is my new #OPNsense Router.
My old router is a #Linksys WRT3200ACM running #DDWRT & it's blue, so I called it #Tachikoma from #GhostInTheShell.
So went with the same theme here.
I am really happy with it😁.
I'm still getting for feel for OPNsense & where everything is
I've been playing with Suricata & I got Zenarmor installed.For more info about my network setup & more Pic's

Week of reminder for our monthly meetup.
This Wednesday, June 18th at 7pm. Normal place of @impropercity. It seems like we will have some heat, so come help me drink a beer.
I finally decided on my old router for stickers. Come offer your best sticker tribute to #DDWRT router
I am copying @bouldersec, just did not have any better ideas… also not as vintage of a router as their OG.

A decade ago I modified a standard US 110V wall outlet so that it contained a hidden wifi hotspot. Thus, using #ddwrt open source software for routers, I could create a low bandwidth wifi-network that reached the basement of my 6-story building.
I wanted to know when the clothes dryer was done. But, it was more than that—
The other possible solution was to buy a SIM card and make the monitor a cellular device. This (I want to stress) was over a decade ago 2009.
