  2. Although called foxes, the family's appearance was unusual...

✨The father had fur of glistening white needles and a glowing tail just like a 5-pronged vajra (金剛杵).

🦌The mother had the slender neck and head of a deer, and the body of a regular fox.

  3. Ōmandokoro (大政所) recovered and Hideyoshi kept his word. The shrine built the Rōmon (楼門) with the donation💸
Many assumed the story was legend until a pledge by Hideyoshi was found during restoration work.

  4. Happy Friday from Japan!

Fushimi Ward in Kyoto is famous for "that shrine with the many orange toori gates". It is also a major sake-producing area and a pleasant district to explore.

  5. The foxes pleaded that their wisdom could benefit the world, but that in their animal form their time was fleeting.

Inari Ōkami quickly saw their value and made them his/her familiars. The father 'Osusuki' (小薄) served the upper shrine and the mother 'Akomachi' (阿古町) the lower.

  8. 9) FOXES🦊

Kitsune (狐) are familiars of the 'rice god' Inari Ōkami (稲荷大神), most probably because they hunted pests that invaded rice stores. In folklore foxes are said to have shapeshifting abilities.

These cute omikuji can be found at Fushimi Inari's Araki-jinja (荒木神社).

  9. It may seem strange that such a relatively small shrine rivaled the famed Fushimi Inari for gates, but it should be remembered that gates as votive offerings only appeared in significant numbers at Fushimi after 1804 (at which time Takenaka-jinja was already in decline).

  10. Fushimi Ward in southern Kyoto is best known for its iconic Fushimi Inari Shrine - but Fushimi is also Japan’s second-greatest sake-brewing area (owing to its soft water), and just generally a quite pleasant district to walk around.

  12. In 1194 Emperor Go-Toba (後鳥羽天皇) decreed that Fushimi Inari had the right to 'divide' and re-enshrine the spirit of Inari Ōkami, allowing for new shrines to be created and a hierarchy established.

The god, held in a sacred object, is moved to a new home via paulownia box.

  13. At its heart Motomiya-sai (本宮祭) celebrates the spread of the Inari faith.

Inari Ōkami (稲荷大神), god of agriculture, industry, prosperity, worldly success, rice, fertility, tea, saké and foxes, is said to have been enshrined in over 100,000 'shrines' across Japan & the world.

  14. Locals would joke that in the pouring rain it was possible to stay dry on the climb up the mountain as the gates were so numerous and so densely packed together!

    ✧ Fushimi Inari-taisha ✧

Fushimi Inari-taisha is the main Shinto shrine of the Japanese deity Inari Ōkami, located in Fushimi-ku, Kyoto. It sits at the base of a mountain, also named Inari, located 233 metres (764 ft) above sea level. The site's earliest structures were built in 711 on the Inariyama hill in southwestern Kyoto, but the shrine was re-locate...

  16. 🕊️THE FOUNDING OF FUSHIMI INARI🌾

Hata-no-Irogu (秦伊呂具) had amassed such wealth that he could afford to use large cakes of pounded rice as targets for his archery practice.
One day the rice cake transformed into a large white bird and flew off. Irogu hastily followed.

  17. Besides being home to the iconic Fushimi Inari Shrine, Kyoto’s Fushimi Ward is known for being Japan’s second-largest sake-producing area. It is possible to visit some of the sake breweries (image 3), a few of which are located along Horikawa Canal (image 2) – where boat tours are available, and locals like to walk their dogs 🐕. Here is a set of photos from a walk around Fushimi.
