    Kitsune (狐) are familiars of the 'rice god' Inari Ōkami (稲荷大神), most probably because they hunted pests that invaded rice stores. In folklore foxes are said to have shapeshifting abilities.

    These cute omikuji can be found at Fushimi Inari's Araki-jinja (荒木神社).

  3. It may seem strange that such a relatively small shrine rivaled the famed Fushimi Inari for gates, but it should be remembered that gates as votive offerings only appeared in significant numbers at Fushimi after 1804 (at which time Takenaka-jinja was already in decline).

    Hata-no-Irogu (秦伊呂具) had amassed such wealth that he could afford to use large cakes of pounded rice as targets for his archery practice.
    One day the rice cake transformed into a large white bird and flew off. Irogu hastily followed.
