Ōmandokoro (大政所) recovered and Hideyoshi kept his word. The shrine built the Rōmon (楼門) with the donation💸
Many assumed the story was legend until a pledge by Hideyoshi was found during restoration work. -
The foxes pleaded that their wisdom could benefit the world, but that in their animal form their time was fleeting.
Inari Ōkami quickly saw their value and made them his/her familiars. The father 'Osusuki' (小薄) served the upper shrine and the mother 'Akomachi' (阿古町) the lower.

Although called foxes, the family's appearance was unusual...
✨The father had fur of glistening white needles and a glowing tail just like a 5-pronged vajra (金剛杵).
🦌The mother had the slender neck and head of a deer, and the body of a regular fox.

For 10 days little happened, the castle's fortifications proving almost impregnable (a fire in one of the towers was quickly extinguished).
Then, a devious plan was devised.
A letter, directed to one of the defenders, was shot by arrow into the castle.It warned the defender that unless he helped end the siege his wife and children (now hostage) would be crucified.

It may seem strange that such a relatively small shrine rivaled the famed Fushimi Inari for gates, but it should be remembered that gates as votive offerings only appeared in significant numbers at Fushimi after 1804 (at which time Takenaka-jinja was already in decline).
