  1. @arstechnica @pluralistic Corporations say they love free markets, but they love profit more. Free market for thee, fixed prices for me.

    > Amazon’s response acknowledged that it uses reserve prices, saying it implemented the system because “relevant ads [were] increasingly winning at prices below market value.”

Isn't the price that won the auction the market price, because, you know, it's the price the market discovered?

  2. Just a reminder that #capitalism does not equal #freemarket. #China dumped a ton of startup money into a lot of companies, assuming that 95% would fail. Those 5% went on to make billions in a free market with a ton of healthy competition. Norway also holds a majority share in all of its companies. Now the government owns a majority stake, and all profits go directly back to taxpayers. The best rise to the top, and the rest die, like free markets are supposed to work. Meanwhile, in the land of the free, we dump tons of #subsidies into giant #corporations that make enough money to lobby politicians for it, and we get no profits back from our taxes. We give around $1T a year, or 1/4th of our yearly spending on corporate subsidies, and never see a dime back from it as they continue to dodge taxes. Capitalism is about who owns the means of production, and it's never the taxpayers or the workers.
  3. Just in case you were wondering, free-market capitalism was only ever an excuse to push US made products and services on the rest of the world. If profit goes somewhere else, then the US government invokes national security without citing any evidence.

  4. The move provides fresh evidence of Trump’s intention to transform #GlobalTrade, despite numerous #court challenges & the protests of #US #consumers & businesses that have been stuck with higher #tax bills. Over the past 17 months, the #Trump admin has cycled through #trade #law after trade law as it tries to build a system to shield the US #economy from foreign #competition [it’s called a #FreeMarket, pretty freaking American]

  5. Everyone should follow Mamdani's lead and get in the habit of mocking Friedrich Hayek and free-market capitalism.

  6. Why your fare cost so much, and uber drivers get paid so little:
It is the result of a highly calculated corporate strategy known as surveillance pricing (or algorithmic personalized pricing).
In a genuine free market, prices function as transparent signals shaped by open supply and demand. Both buyers and sellers see the market rate, ensuring fairness. If a business overcharges, consumers walk; if it underpays, workers leave for a competitor.
Surveillance pricing completely subverts this dynamic by weaponizing information asymmetry. Using a massive hoard of data, the platform creates an invisible digital partition between the customer and the service provider. Instead of a shared, transparent marketplace, the algorithm isolates both sides into separate, closed-door negotiations where the platform holds all the cards.
For the passenger: The algorithm calculates the exact upper ceiling of what you will tolerate paying at that specific second—factoring in everything from your immediate location, time of day, and urgency, to your historical behavioral trends.
For the driver: The platform acts as an electronic monopsony (a market with many sellers but only one dominant buyer of labor). It isolates the worker and calculates the absolute structural floor of what that specific driver will accept to keep their car moving. By dangling unpredictable, variable incentives, it extracts hours of uncompensated labor (waiting and idling time), leaving the driver to absorb all the capital risk, vehicle depreciation, and fuel costs.
By blinding both sides of the transaction, the platform acts as a centralized command structure rather than a passive matching service. It systematically strips away the "consumer surplus" (the extra value and savings a buyer gets) and the "producer surplus" (the fair profit a worker keeps) and absorbs that wealth entirely for itself.
This mechanism is profoundly anti-free market because it replaces transparent competition with a proprietary information monopoly. True markets thrive on decentralized, shared knowledge; this system relies entirely on keeping everyone else in the dark.

  7. Democracy cannot survive an excessively free market; and containing the market is the task of politics.

  13. After moving to #Germany and seeing the high #QualityOfLife in #Europe in general, I started questioning: #capitalism and the #FreeMarket will always win over socialism? Youtubers #TheBlackForestFamily try to settle the debate once and for all.

  14. I've been listening to the #freakonomics episode on #adamSmith. It reminds me that the power and benefits of #capitalism aren't because it ensures "free markets". The benefits come from intense competition, which makes the vendors better and the products cheaper. Pretty much the entire success of the modern world is built on this #competition (+ #scientificMethod).

Unfortunately, the natural course of a free market, driven by well-known and well-taught business strategies, is to avoid competition, by using customer lock-in and other anti-competitive moves until you get to effective #monopoly power. Once you have monopoly power, you can go into harvest mode, raising prices and spending less, mostly on protecting the "moats" around your monopoly.

What we really need is not #freeMarket, it's #freeCompetition.

So when you hear a public policy debate or a business tycoon going on about "free markets" you should ask yourself -- would this make competition easier or harder? Would it give consumers and customers more choice or less choice?

This is one of the main reasons I have devoted most of my career to running or helping #startUps. A new underdog entrant is the essence of competition and expanding choices. Unfortunately, any startup that is successful enough to become dominant in its industry, becomes anti-competitive and can become a drag on society's progress.

Whew, I didn't expect that to be so long! I better stop now. Please let me know what you think.

This relates to #wikileaks, perhaps. Julian in 2012 revealed he had #insuranceFiles on such venerable personalities as #RupertMurdoch.

We know #politicians are controlled largely by #insiderTrading (its an abomination that #NancyPelosi last month endorsed such as part of the "#freeMarket". Sad to see her whitewash #whiteCollarCrime. Add to #imprisonList).

How do they control others for whom #insideTrading may not work?
