meine ausrüstung ist einfach nicht zum birding geeignet, seht, das ist ein teichhuhn. die erkennung von iNat hat alles mögliche drin gesehen, unter anderem ein wiesel, und wenn ich fair bleiben will, ich kann's ihr nicht verdenken.

Da ist man tagelang bei bestem Wetter an der Nordsee und wartet auf die vorhergesagten Polarlichter und wann kommen sie? Wenn man wieder zu Hause ist und der Himmel voller Wolken. Meh.

#FotoFail - trying to shoot a bird (Green Rosella) in dark forest conditions at only ISO3200 results in handholding 500mm at 1/20th sec, and while the image stabilisation in the lens is quite decent, it's not *that* good.

and since I was clearing the camera, here's a Brown Goshawk from the other morning. It's a #FotoFail because apparently 1/1250th of a second is not fast enough to capture the takeoff sufficiently.

But also a success. I had heard rumours that there was at least one platypus in our local creek and this evening, armed with the wrong lens for the conditions, I confirmed it.

Alas, 1/50th sec @ ISO 12,800 is too slow for a speedy platypus.

I was testing using a cheap camera body (EOS 600D) on my expensive birding lens setup this afternoon, to see if the APS-C sensor's 1.6x crop would help.
Alas, the poor focus tracking and sensor noise mean this difficult shot did not come out (bird is not in focus), and definitely would have if I'd been using my regular EOS 1DX body.

Cute pose on the Eastern Whipbird though.

When focus stacking goes wrong!

As said before - the lens I mostly used this trip was one where the autofocus wasn't working. This resulted in a lot of images, all of which are ever so slighly out-of-focus, because I don't really have a way to perfectly focus anything without a tripod, a split prism or, indeed, autofocus.
At least it's not too visible if you don't enlarge it too much, and I did get some practice framing stuff, so: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
