Captive (rescue) platypus in a tank, swimming.
This active female platypus was busy swimming around the tank, diving to the bottom to look for worms, etc.
Not the best of shots, low light, shooting through wet glass, but they look ok, and she was fascinating to watch.#tassie2023 #AustralianWildlife #WildOz #monotreme #platypus

While on Bruny Island, we found a second echidna (this one was on the side of the road towards the north end of the island).
There was nowhere safe to stop, so this is shot from within the car, poking the camera out the window.

On the last day in Tasmania, we went platypus hunting again, this time at the Tasmanian Arboretum which is known to have platypus in their lake. Apparently there are 5 or 6 in there, but we only saw 2, however, the two we saw had a bit of a fight right in front of us.
In 2 of these shots you can see the chase before the fight, and the other two are of the platypus that was chased before it all happened.#platypus #monotreme #AustralianWildlife #WildOz #tassie2023

While looking for a completely different bird, this male Superb Fairywren insisted on posing on a stick next to me, so I took the hint, and took his photo.

Did a spot of Pademelon spotting in the caravan park tonight. This little fellow knew I was there, but was not lifting its head from munching grass for anyone.

We were being watched, but luckily it was a Tasmanian Pademelon and not velociraptors ;-)

Last night, at about 11pm, I checked the Aurora app and there was a non-zero chance of seeing the southern lights, so we took a drive out of Launceston to the south to see if we could spot anything.
Alas, nothing could be seen with the naked eye, but I set up the camera anyway, and tried a couple of shots.
IT WAS THERE!
I even captured some meteors in one of the shots.

We visited Liffey Falls this morning. It's a bit of a windy dirt track to drive in to the shorter walk, but worth it. There are four falls along the track, but most of them aren't in a position to be photographed, so it's only this last one that I shot properly.
It is the drier months at the moment, so while they were flowing well, it was obvious that in the wet season they see a lot more water over them.

You can see why these birds used to be called Spur-winged Plovers. They're actually Masked Lapwings (not plovers at all, although people still call them that colloquially)

While I'm posting baby birds, I found this family of Greylag Geese in the Tamar Island Wetlands too. According to my bird guides, they're not even meant to be in this state, but they are migratory, so here we are (or possibly they're escaped domesticated birds?)

A Purple Swamp-Hen chick, spotted this afternoon at the Tamar Island Wetlands.
Also, and adult (not the parent, a different one), so you can see what it will grow up to be.

Today we relocated to Launceston for the final few days before heading back to the mainland.
Since we hadn't yet found a platypus, we set out to do so. I can now confirm Tasmanian Platypus come out in the middle of the day (not just dawn/dusk/night) and are indeed slightly bigger than the mainland ones.

Pacific Black Ducks on Little Blue Lake (NE Tasmania).
AFAIK Little Blue Lake is man made and left over from mining in the area. There's a warning sign nearby stating the water has high aluminium content and as such one shouldn't swim in it.

More Bruny Island birds.
A Sooty Oystercatcher (with a muscle), a Pied Oystercatcher, a Silver Gull (with fish) and a Brown Falcon.

Some birds I spotted on Bruny Island.
No Little Penguins, or Forty-spotted Pardalotes, but we have a Short-tailed Shearwater (aka Muttonbird), a Silvereye, a New Holland Honeyeater and a Pacific Gull.

Very special bird today!
It's the endangered Swift Parrot ! (also Bird of the Year).
In fact, it's THREE endangered Swift Parrots.
I can also confirm, when they take flight, they are indeed swift. (someone over the road spooked all the birds and these guys were gone in a flash - it wasn't me that spooked them, I was lying on the wet ground).

Also at the botanic gardens was a Yellow Wattlebird, and another Eastern Rosella. When the rosella called, it partially fanned its tail, which I caught here.
Back at our campsite this afternoon, a Galah wandered past the caravan, so I took its photo too.

This morning, we visited the Royal Botanic Gardens in Hobart, and there were several clutches of ducklings!
A couple of Pacific Black Ducks and about three sets of Australian Wood Ducks.

More birds encountered today. All were wild, even though I saw three of them at the Bonorong Sanctuary (they had just flown in, presumably because it was a safe place, and there was food).
Forest Raven, Eastern Rosella, Masked Lapwing and earlier this morning at Mt Field, a Little Black Cormorant (one of four or five fishing in a small dam).

We went back to Russell Falls after dark to see the glowworms. I can confirm, they are there, just not many of them. Maybe it was the half moon, maybe it's just too cold for them, I'm not sure. Definitely not impressive like Natural Arch in Qld.
Anyway, since I was there, I decided to shoot Russell Falls by moonlight. It's quite ethereal.

Big camera photo of Horseshoe Falls at Mt Field National Park.
It was just late enough in the afternoon to not need filters for a slow shutter shot.

One native, and two introduced bird species.
There's a juvenile and an adult Blackbird, and the Tasmanian Native Hen (aka Turbo Chook - due to their ability to run quite quickly).

Everyone that comes to Cradle Mountain and Dove Lake in particular, shoots this scene, so who am I not to do the same?
Late afternoon/pre-dusk as the weather closed in.
