As an example, you may see a food recall implicating various totally unrelated brands, for example a hummus recall could affect private store brands at Kroger, Meijer, Trader Joe’s and Wal-Mart.
This is due to the commercial practice of ‘co-packing’ as it is colloquially known in the food industry. Manufacturing companies (retailers, lifestyle brands) contract food manufacturers to create products/recipes together, and the manufacturing company prepare the food and ship it to retailers/distributors.
Does it mean that the hummus in each private store brand is the same? It does not. Each retailer and manufacturer will cost out their own recipe, and have their own constraints e.g. sourcing for label claims*, allergens et al.
It only means that they were manufactured in the same facility.
*an example of a label claim could be ‘GMO Free’ if a retailer required it for their private label product, this would then require sourcing GMO Free certified raw material and a recipe containing it.
