Complimented @SDF too soon, perhaps. Turns out I was using mastodon.social, which works fine. SDF did post this one with a tantalizing delay but it didn't time out. Still don't trust it to migrate off it, so today will be spent refitting my Nintendo Wii with newly-delivered Wiimotes and cables.
Aaannnd... then it timed out saving an edit to this post.
