#TFW you reboot your #Linode, and apparently something has changed on the host because the network interface name reported by the kernel is now different, so NetworkManager fails to configure the network and you have to waste a half hour logging into the console over lish and relearning how the fuck manually configured network interfaces are configured in NetworkManager so you can figure out what's wrong and fix it. *sigh*

Then Akamai buys them, and moves the pricing far away from what any non-commercial entity should need to pay.

Stuck on there easily another 1-2 years extra simply because I couldn't get the time to make the move :blobcatprofit:

But now the demon is exorcised. Moved on to #hetzner since their US presence is pretty solid. Early vibes are definitely good, just need to keep them away from Akamai.

Also went from bare metal to the docker route. Led to a little (ok a lot, since I am still learning docker) more work to plan out a custom build for the customizations, but wow it is going to be SO nice to have it all scripted right in the compose.

This is such a terrible #web anti-pattern. Why did it take like 20 seconds to figure out how to login to my !#@$!# site I pay a few hundred a month.

I knew #akamai would f-up #linode

Mainly upset about the pricing, but even stuff like UX directly informs how you feel about your userbase. Why is the login link tiny, and above TWO folds.

Now that #hertzner has a US DC, I am looking to migrate. But I just need some time to duplicate the setup and ponder the move. Test the migration a few times, etc.

Apparently I have to have at least one #Linode running or they don't serve my DNS. This doesn't make sense to me because I still have website buckets which need the domain to work, and those are charged separately

@Mer__edith Even if it is necessary to keep a central control plane and centrally managed relay systems, there's no reason why you need to run in a single cloud or on a hyperscalar. Especially with the end-to-end trust model that #Signal has, the security requirements on control and relay nodes is lower.

There are also other non-hyperscalar clouds which would fit some of these needs. For example, the #Akamai Cloud (formerly #Linode) has been expanding its global footprint precisely for the use-case of taking on applications needing global footprint and performance but without being tied to a hyperscaler.

Using tools such as Terraform and Kubernetes can help orchestrate multi-provider / cross-platform deployments.

i've had a #linode since 2008. just deleted it and closed the account. never was an akamai fan, but it wasn't the acquisition that did it for me.

I did a dry run on #gotosocial last night and might be getting some RAM back from my #linode #vps by shutting down #mastodon after I flip the #nginx #proxy over. Timing will likely be a weekend or two in the making. We shall see.

What's your stack for remotely accessing and maintaining your servers?

For me, #Tailscale forms the backbone for everything. I used to use CJDns which worked exceptionally well but Tailscale means I don't have to touch every machine if I need to make a change to the network.

Everything is centered around Tailscale.

My business partner, and partner-in-crime has Tailscale installed on all of his machines back in Atlanta. I have Tailscale installed on all of my machines here in Albuquerque. We use ACLs to prevent the other from accessing each-others' personal devices.

All of our VMs and VPSes whether hosted at #Hetzner, #OVH, #Linode, or #Contabo get Tailscale installed on them within 30 seconds of being booted for the first time.

Network or host #firewalls are configured to only allow ingress traffic over HTTP, HTTPS, and the required Tailscale port.

SSH is never exposed to the Internet, even though we only use PKI for authentication.

First up, after Tailscale gets installed #Cockpit is the very next application. It's got a nice color terminal and allows me to monitor logs and health.

Next, the #Grafana agent. Gotta be able to monitor overall system health! It's also configured to communicate back with the Grafana dashboard across Tailscale.

In fact, pretty much everything internally is configured to communicate across the Tailscale VPN. I have subnet routes setup to route as much traffic betweeen nodes and hosts internally across the RFC-1918 interfaces and I've disabled source NAT internally.

Followed by whatever else needs to be setup and installed on the machine.

This keeps all traffic encrypted at the network level, and ensures I don't need to open up firewall ports just to access my machines no matter where in the World I'm at.

I looked at doing something like this with Cloudflare initially but we are already heavily reliant on Cloudflare for a lot of our infrastructure, I didn't want to rely on them to gain remote access to my boxes too.

In fact, I'm not 100% comfortable with relying on Tailscale for everything but so far so good. Good thing is if Tailscale decides to go tits up on us I can always switch back to CJDns relatively easily.
