#Built in 1862 by Mack & Neill. It targeted #NimpkishRiver fish, specifically #sockeye #salmon . Seasonal processing employed many Indigenous people. At about the same time, a Christian mission/school which had been established at Fort Rupert moved to Alert Bay to minister to the Indigenous population which was moving to the island to work in the cannery.

Now #abandoned - 1st salted fish #cannery built in #AlertBay & used as #NamgisNation #fishingNets sort station after cannery closed.
