Happy International Cat Day! Just received my first bad review on my book GOOSE CREEK HOLLER. Pretty harsh, and while I get where the reviewer is coming from, did he actually read the part about the other Southern delicacies consumed by the Appalachian family of Buchnells? It also starts with a "G". I think not, or he might have given a more favorable review and at least a one paw up. And it's hollar, not holler, Mr. Harrison. How Bookstore Cats Comforted Our Broken Hearts
Three days prior to departing on our cross-country road trip this spring, we were devastated to have to say goodbye to our wonderful 17 year old Tuxedo cat, Gus. Despite the logistical challenges — many lodging establishments refuse to accept cats — and the added costs, we always looked forward to every road trip with him.
Gus napping while on the roadGus was our travel buddy and loved joining us on these adventures. He innately knew when were had arrived at our place to stay each night and instantly jumped into his kitty backpack. Upon entering the room, he immediately selected which bed was his and laid on it like a King overlooking his royal realm. Eventually, he visited 15 different states. Pretty darn good for a cat who had never travelled outside of Michigan or Indiana prior to age 12.
Saying goodbye to Gus was hard enough, but the many miles in the car was even tougher without him peering from within or on top of his open crate. He was so much a part of our travels that the car felt very empty without him there.
En route back to the Midwest, I came up with an idea. Why not visit some bookstores while traveling that have cats residing there? We had met several at Raven Bookstore in Lawrence, Kansas the previous year and had met two cats at Cumberland Hardware in Nashville’s Five Points recently. Maybe some friendly felines will comfort us. Besides, we always love stopping/shopping at independent bookstores.
After some research, we found a number of independent bookstores along or near our route that could fit the bill. The hardest part turned out to be timing our travels to the hours of operation of each store. Also, just because a store is known to have resident cats, does not mean the cat(s) will be there the day we stop by.
In one case, we reversed course from a planned visit to a bookstore in LaPorte, Indiana because we just happened to call ahead and found out the resident cat (Waffles) had decided not to come to work that day. In Franklin, Indiana, despite being listed in a recently published book about bookshop cats, the resident feline kept getting caught behind bookshelves, hence was no longer spending its days there. We also visited a cat cafe in northern Indiana, but without the bookstore vibe and having to pay to play, it just wasn’t the same. Something about cats and books just jive well together.
Despite these disappointments, we trudged forward and succeeded in visiting resident cats (and one resident dog) in five difference independent bookstores. In one case, The Literary Cat in Pittsburg, Kansas, we found a throughly delightful bookstore occupied by both resident cats and adoptable cats. Below is a list of our successes in order of visitation:

Resident/adoptable cats met: Tommy, Fozzie, Saph, Rue, James, Doug, and many others!
TommyFozzie Saph- Marigolds Bookstore – Bartlesville, Oklahoma
Resident imitation cat (dog) met: Bonnie
BonnieAll-in-all, meeting and greeting these friendly felines across the heartland did help us recover from our grief. Just the soft caress of their silky fur or their subtle purrs did wonders for our hearts. Scout at Hyde Bros. was an excellent first encounter. Gatsby at The Book House, loved having his back scratched and would roll over for a kitty back massage just like Gus always did. Several kitties at The Literary Cat were absolutely adorable and were tempting to adopt, but we weren’t ready yet and it was not fair to welcome a new family member into the household with a 800 mile drive home — Meowwww!
Future road trips will be sure to include kitty cat rest and comfort stops at independent bookstores along the way.
