I'm starting to kick around ideas for a #FASP for social feeds. @evan has suggested one for global hashtags, and the #Fediscovery folks are doing one for search. It feels like "feeds" is a missing & @Flipboard, @surf and @newsmast and others have great feeds in the wild now. And I think, correctly me if I'm wrong @darius that the exact new feed format is being sussed out at the WC3. I think maybe the time is right to consider what a Feeds FASP might be. Whatcha think? https://github.com/mastodon/fediverse_auxiliary_service_provider_specifications

#fediscovery seems like a pretty cool project.
I personally feel the lack of account mobility and custom discovery/recommendation are the only two things missing in activitypub/mastodon, so this seems pretty cool
-
I'll be on stage soon in the #SocialWeb devroom at #FOSDEM, talking for a few minutes about implementing #Fediscovery into @manyfold, and how it works. 16:20 CET in H.2215, or online at https://live.fosdem.org/watch/h2215
-
@john it's ... complicated. We are working on #fediscovery which is opt-in across more than one server instance, which is more than you otherwise get. The overall search and discovery element has a lot of trust and safety concerns.

James Smith (@floppy) is coming to FediForum and will demo Manyfold’s #fediscovery #fasp integration.
Demos are on Wednesday. FediForum starts tomorrow with a keynote. There is still time to register! Go to https://fediforum.org

@astro @czam maybe next time? and at #Fediforum? I know @Floppy has #Fediscovery working with @manyfold now.
-
Does #fediscovery work yet? Docs are hazy but I'd love an explore feed on my personal instance

Are there already some FASP available?
#Mastodon #Fediverse #Fediscovery -
@thisismissem @rauschma oh neat - figured as much from reading the spec page.
FWIW, I'm particularly interested in learning how something like #fediscovery would work for projects like the Fedidevs project that @anze3db created, which aggregates disparate posts for things like events. See the FOSDEM and Djangocon Europe examples below:
https://fedidevs.com/fosdem25/
https://fedidevs.com/djangoconeu25/Anyway, maybe i'll catch you there 👍

Anyway, if this #fediscovery stuff has caught your attention, here's the github repo for the spec:
https://github.com/mastodon/fediverse_auxiliary_service_provider_specifications
If you're going to this event tonight in Berlin, say hi! And thank you @andypiper for letting me know about the event.

This here is the project page for #fediscovery.
I understand it to be an optional, decentralised spec for users on participating fediverse server instances to opt-in to discovery of search services.
I won’t respond to comments about whether you think search is a good or bad idea - the page has a video, link to spec and the slides presented at #FOSDEM.

If you're involved in the Mastodon / Fediverse #fediscovery programme, you've worked on the project, or you've been following its progress over the last year or so and you're going to this event, would you leave a comment in this thread?
It was funded as part of the EU NGI Search programme, and I think it's an interesting project. I'd like to learn more about it, and I figure others might as well:
I’ll add some links in the next post.

@Setok Your server can join a relay to get more data, but obviously that comes with bigger storage and processing requirements. We're working on something called #fediscovery that should help in a more efficient way.

This month's Trunk & Tidbits Mastodon blog post is packed with updates, including on the work-in-progress Fediscovery project.
"Testing of an initial Fediscovery implementation is ongoing."
Very excited about this!

Our #TrunkAndTidbits engineering update for January (also including #FOSDEM) is here - here's what we have been working on so far this year. Includes an update on the #Fediscovery project, and some cool projects from the broader developer ecosystem. https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2025/02/trunk-tidbits-january-2025/

Haven't really had a chance to watch any of the relevant #fossdem talks, have there been any major updates? Does the project have a public timeline anywhere?
Last commit seems to be from three months ago.

At #fosdem @dave of Mastodon dev team presented the next milestone for #Mastodon :mastodon: that will benefit the entire #fediverse :fediverse:
Content is already federated, while search is still confined to the local server. They’re working on search federation through service providers hosting content. #Fediscovery is a project to implement federated search on activitypub federated and decentralised networks. There is already a repository available for the specifications drafts.
-
"Today, each application (and server/instance) that participates in the Fediverse is largely independent when it comes to discovery. "Fediscovery" is a project led by Mastodon gGmbH and funded by NGI Search that explores a way to improve this situation with a set of external services that any fediverse software can use."
And again, this is all opt-in, so I'm really excited to see this in action. There's been a lot of controversy over the past two years around tools that were made with the intention to help us all better connect. This is a challenging task, in part for technical reasons, but also because many of us deeply care about privacy and security.
So having an opt-in solution that developers can tap into and create better discovery tools that work for everyone who wants them is really going to be a big improvement.

The @Mastodon team will be at the upcoming annual free and open source event #FOSSDEM in Brussels this upcoming weekend to talk about their (opt-in!) Fediverse Discovery Providers project:

Mastodon continues their iconic streak of fediverse innovation with their fediscovery project.
I look forward to working with @Mastodon to bring better discovery and search to Pixelfed and Loops.
This is the magic of the fediverse, no amount of VC funding could compete.
-
The possibility of #Bluesky putting ads in search is exactly why the Fediverse has to get serious about social discovery.
And it’s why I applaud #Mastodon’s initiative with #Fediscovery and the plan to decentralize Fediverse search as well.

@bookstardust Pasting the profile URL into the search bar always works.
But I agree that discoverability on the Fediverse isn't great. The Mastodon folks founded the #Fediscovery project to help with this.

I have just posted an issue re: "#Fediscovery" to their GitHub repo, titled "This project should rather be stopped in its infancy".

Fediverse Discovery Providers
