  1. Wondering if Mastodon is really the right space for me. Even with 10,000 characters, my last post still felt cramped. I have so much to say, and trying to pour that into any fixed container is a challenge. Perhaps Substack suits my long-form tendencies better. Is lengthy content considered poor etiquette here? Genuinely curious what others think.

  2. One thing I wish was a part of etiquette on my federated servers:

    News items that are "powerful person says stupid thing" can still be tagged as politics or put under CW.

    People are good about tagging "powerful person says scary thing" - and I'm asking for the same treatment regardless of how Thing makes you feel.

    Your schadenfreude is my letsnotrightnow.

  3. Richard Porson (1759 - 1808) offers wisdom on Fediverse etiquette. Samuel Rogers in his Tabletalks and Recollections (1859) quotes this:

    "Had I a carriage, and did I see a well-dressed person on the road, I would always invite him in, and learn of him what I could."

    Clearly:
    - "carriage" = "my Fedi account";
    - "well-dressed person" = "a pleasant Fedi participant";
    - "invite him in" = "boost their posts and follow their account".

  4. Hello, Fediverse!

    I feel it is probably inappropriate to ask this as a reply to another post.

    What is a Reply Guy?

    What does a #ReplyGuy post look like?
    (Label any example replies, please!)

    How do I avoid making them by accident? I assume people that make Reply Guy posts are probably oblivious to what they're doing.

    I am asking as a preventative measure, so I can reply without being perceived as a nuisance participant.

  5. I follow people back who follow me (unless they seem like a bot or creepy), and I follow people I find interesting. If you happen to listen to my music and like it, that's awesome! But like I say in my bio, I'm here to make friends, not cynically presume everyone follows me solely b/c of my music.
    Only about 20% of my IRL friends are fans of my music, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  6. Finally reported that skaly person who keeps following and then unfollowing me once I follow them back. Too bad, b/c the music is pretty good, but I don't appreciate being treated like that.
    People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care. 😦

  7. Re: my last boosted toot, I have been using the unlisted status on a lot of my replies with the (it appears, incorrect) belief it would hide those toots from other people's home feeds.

    But if unlisted toots still appear in followers' feeds, even if they aren't part of that particular conversation, what are the best practices for conversations on Mastodon? What's the best etiquette to follow?

    Any tips or thoughts warmly welcomed.

  8. is there a guide on how to follow proper #FediEtiquette like how not to make it a #twitter thing?

  9. Is it impolite not to follow back people who have added you when they are posting in a language other than English, which I do not speak? #Fedietiquette
