  1. Panic over:

Linux Mint kernel 7.x boot failure fixed!

An old manually installed EVDI/DKMS setup for a USB-driven third display was breaking initramfs generation.

The new kernel then panicked with “Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)”, while a 6.x kernel still worked.

Booting into an older kernel, removing the old EVDI setup, installing the Ubuntu-packaged EVDI, and rebuilding initramfs fixed it.

  2. As this new #kernel series is not supported by the version of #EVDI that I had for #Displaylink, I had to download the newest version of that and compile it. Then the evdi #KernelModule built correctly on the next boot up.

  3. And here I am sitting in front of four working monitors (three external, two via #HDMI, one via #USBC), all configured through #KDE and using #Displaylink and #EVDI #KernelModules without any faffing around, except for plugging things into the correct ports to begin with. #FreeSoftware has come a long way in the decades since I started using it. And now, more often that not, #ItJustWorks!

  4. But now, I found a way to do it thanks to continual searching for answers. Basically, I didn’t need to touch #dkms – the dynamic #KernelModule support system but I did need to download a version of the #evdi #module that was compatible with the latest kernels. Building it and then importing the keys was the final step. I suppose at some point a new kernel family will appear, says 6.20, when I will need to update evdi again but I know how it works now. Phew!
