Why do the big AI companies continue to bleed money as they race to improve technology that hasn't yet lived up to the current hype? Why does it seem like they don't care how much damage they do in the process? Why are they constantly wingeing on about "existential threat" when they demonstrate no real intention to slow down?
Because it's not about "AI". It's not about technology. It's not even, ultimately, about money. It's about the difference between terminal extinction and final extinction, the technoligarchy's fierce commitment to avoid the latter, and their keen desire to bring about the former. And the public discourse, especially by the press, is missing the plot.

@johnwehrle I'm defending the notion of effective and fact-based criticism here, not longtermism ...
... but note that the term "existential risk" LONG predates the emergence of "longtermism", and through 2000 is also far more prevalent. See screenshot, and note that "longtermism" is multiplied 3x to scale equivalently to "existential risk".
I've strong concerns with any argument which leans heavily on such readily-refuted claims. The viewpoint may well be justified, but a bit less hyperventilating hyperbole and poor scholarship would greatly help the case.
The notion of "existential risk" was originally applied in a religious context (by Paul Tillich) and to nuclear weapons.
