    Died this day: 08/31/1965 (b. 05/02/1890) Edward Elmer "DOC" Smith was an American science-fiction author, best known for the Lensman series. The Lensman series was a runner-up for the 1966 Hugo Award for Best All-Time Series, losing to the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov.
