Cryptops sp. in the process of moulting. The large rear (ultimate) legs can apparently be jettisoned (autotomized) to confuse predators. Eyeless. Swarthmore, PA, USA. #centipede #nature #chilopoda #ecdysis #moulting #arthropod

For #WoodlouseWednesday, an isopod molting!
All arthropods (which includes crustaceans like isopods, plus insects, spiders, and more) molt to grow bigger. Isopods molt in two stages, one end at a time. More details here from the invaluable crevicedwelling: https://crevicedwelling.tumblr.com/post/703478233539166208/a-little-post-on-molting-in-isopods-uniquely

When the larva settles on a crab, it creates a root-like 'interna'. These roots extend to different organs systems, swiping nutrients from the hapless crab. In some, they even extend to the nervous system. It also disables the crabs ability to moult--which would likely be fatal for the parasite. #ecdysis #parasite
