  1. I'm currently re-reading Earthsea. I really like the idea that true power resides in knowing the true names of things and letting them be, i.e. letting things flow according to their own nature. The flip side of this power would be domination, where names are taken from people and things and they are forced to do the bidding of a single will. This seems to be exactly the battle played out in the books, in a different way in each story.

  2. As a trans person, it was really nice to learn that Harry Potter was largely a reproduction of A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin. What's more, the original wizarding school was populated entirely by people of color.

  3. Book review: The Tombs of Atuan, Ursula K. Le Guin
    ★★★★★

Still my favorite of the Earthsea books. There's something fascinating about a labyrinth that you must traverse in total darkness, keeping a map and counting turns in your head.

  4. Short story reviews: The Word of Unbinding and The Rule of Names, Ursula K. Le Guin
    ★★★★☆

The original two stories set in Earthsea, before she wrote the novels. Each stands alone, interesting both in themselves and in seeing what the series and its themes grew from.

  5. Just finished #UrsulaKLeGuin's VOICES, second book in the Annals of the Western Shore trilogy. As ever I'm awed by how vividly she depicts her worlds, like I just returned from a visit to Ansul. This trilogy may not get the level of attention #Earthsea gets, but I think they're just as lovely.

  6. Comic book review: A Wizard of Earthsea (Graphic Novel), Ursula K. Le Guin and Fred Fordham
    ★★★★★

Fordham's watercolor-style art is absolutely gorgeous. The adaptation plays to the medium's strengths, allowing the visuals to tell the story when possible, keeping Le Guin's prose when needed. Wide seascapes, rocky coasts, forested landscapes, people (not whitewashed!) and dragons...

  7. Book review: A Wizard of Earthsea, Ursula K. Le Guin
    ★★★★★

The Earthsea series is one of my regular re-reads. It starts here, with the tale of how a goatherd grew into a wizard in a world where magic is woven through everything from the poorest village to the greatest palace. How he released a terrifying evil in his youth, and how he sailed the world seeking how to make up for his mistake.

  8. Freedom is a heavy load, a great and strange burden for the spirit to undertake. It is not easy. It is not a gift given, but a choice made, and the choice may be a hard one.

    -- Ursula K. #LeGuin, "The Tombs of Atuan", Book #2 of #Earthsea

  9. Having read them in two other languages, it's time to read the books of #Earthsea in English.

  10. I wonder why magic is sexist in Earthsea.

I mean, I've read the books, so I know it's technically because of capture of an institution.

Like, magic was essentially hedge wizardry at some point, but then some people started to work together to compare notes and make an academic institution, but as the prestige of the profession grew, it was monopolized by men.

This is almost exactly what happened to IT, so it's definitely believable.

But I wonder why Ursula wrote it like that.

Was it to plant some seed of understanding, perhaps?

    Very low-key.

  11. Dear readers and fans of K. Le Guin: do you know if there's a collection for the "Hainish Cycle", somewhat similar to what "The Books of Earthsea: The Complete Illustrated Edition" is for Earthsea? Cheers!

Jakob looked down, readying himself to jump from the roof. He would dive through the chilly night air, hit the ground in front of the physics building, and all his problems will be gone: his loneliness, his bad grades, his depression. He had never felt he belonged in this world.

A firm hand suddenly held his shoulder. “I don’t think you will fly today, my boy,” said Prof Sperber. A sudden gust of sea-scented wind came and went.

  14. Or, I could try and think some more about the #Earthsea inspired setting I'd love to play as a #TTRPG and which Legends in the Mist may actually be the right fit for...

  19. Been reading/listening to Ursula K Le Guin's A Wizard of Earthsea recently. I can't put my finger on why, but I'm not finding it as affecting as Left Hand of Darkness.

Have you read the Earthsea books? If the first one isn't hitting for me, should I still give the next one a try?

  21. CW: My 2023 reading according to @[email protected] my @[email protected] account at lectura.social

Mostly dominated by female written sci-fi with Ursula K Leguin #Earthsea complete books, then the #brokenEarth trilogy by N.K. Nemisin, and finally the #binti series by Nnedi Okorafor. I had also some time for a bit of graphic novels and my first novel written in Catalan in ages.

  22. Haven’t done a #writingquote for a while but just came across this. Ursula K Le Guin, The Books of Earthsea, Introduction, wrt the first three Earthsea books. “None of them was closely plotted or planned before writing; in each of them much of the story came to me as I followed what I wrote where it inevitably led.”
If it’s good enough for her, it’s good enough for me.

    "The Rule of Names" (1964)
    by Ursula K. Le Guin

A man called Blackbeard arrives on Sattins Island, inquiring about the island's wizard. Meanwhile, the schoolmistress teaches her students the Rule of Names - never ask for or give away your true name, because "to speak the name is to control the thing."

A standalone entry in the EARTHSEA cycle, Le Guin subverts common fantasy tropes in this fun, quick read.

  28. My #BookChallenge, as selected by you lovely folks, this year is going to be an Ursula K Le Guin marathon (in amongst everything else). I am planning on doing The Complete #Earthsea (the illustrated edition) and the complete #HainishCycle (the Library of America collected edition) if I get through that, I will probably also add Always Coming Home to the list…

Maybe I should also do Birthday to the World - the short story collection which first got me into short stories and Le Guin…
