So, if you're #Canadian and an #lgbtq #lgbtqia ally, or... just generally a decent human) then WRITE or CALL your #MP #Member of #Parliament and ask "So what's going on with the government's response to petition #e4268 ? I feel very strongly about this and I trust you do too and let me explain why." Let your elected representatives know that if July 12 comes and goes and no mention from this government you're gonna be #pissed

  2. @ClearlyQueer @oldladyplays So, even IF things get a priority boot in the butt from the PMO or bipartisan support from the NDP etc. there's only so fast legislation can be drafted in consult with stakeholders and the public.

I'd be impressed if there was legislation on the floor of the House inside of a year.

But we're heading in the right direction.

  3. @ClearlyQueer @oldladyplays If you were to say "LGBT members who want in on this: be in Ottawa building X room Y by next Tuesday", that's not cool. Some people (who should... must be included) require accomodation. A week is an incredible and unrealistic timeline. Will they need translators? Physical accessibility? etc. etc.

Government doesn't move slowly because its lazy. Govermnet moves slowly because if it doesn't and skips steps, people get angry.

  4. @ClearlyQueer @oldladyplays What if they DO respond? Well, all that will be is the appropriate minister will indicate that they've taken the matter up and will be drafting preliminary legislation that will be passed to the appropriate parliamentary committee to be workshopped.

There will have to be consultation with stakeholders (so Immigration, Housing, citizenship), appropriate subject matter experts, and community stakeholders.

  5. @ClearlyQueer @oldladyplays What happens if the government doesn't respond?

    Not a parliamentary expert, but

    - any MP can table private member bills anytime. I would fully expect Mike or any number of other MPs would be falling over themselves to table one.

    - we start yet another petition. More than X signatures it HAS to be read in the House. If the same petition KEEPs comes to the floor, eventually the gov. looks bad by not addressing it.

  6. @ClearlyQueer So. Where are we at with petition e-4268?
    petitions.ourcommons.ca/en/Pet
    .. with 160k signatures.
The *most* signatures of this Parliament btw. :)

And lets loop in the submitter: @oldladyplays here!
    Their latest news: wargamers.social/@oldladyplays

TL;DR - it gained enough signatures
    - it was *READ* on the floor of our legislative house by Kitchener MP Mike Morrice.
    - the government had 45 days to respond, which, if I math means July 12.

  7. The world is becoming increasingly hostile to #transgender :transgender: and #nonbinary :nonbinary: individuals.

Canadian residents, please sign a #petition requesting the government to grant #asylum to them from any country that has laws hostile to them, including countries historically considered “safe” such as the UK and the USA.
