  1. Are any of the cyclists here riding the Dunwich Dynamo this weekend? This is another year that I can't make the logistics work and so sadly I won't be riding. Have a great time if you are.

Here's my gpx file of the route, if you need one: ridewithgps.com/routes/28157346

  2. Did anyone ride the Dunwich Dynamo last night? We've had a few posts about previous events but nothing I have found so far for this year.

It is still one of my favourite rides, although the logistics mean I don't get to ride it very often.

  3. @AndyRides nice write up and videos from the #DunwichDynamo. Thank you.

After all these years, it still amazes me that people ride with super bright rear lights (totally unnecessary) and have them flashing (simply unpleasant for anyone behind). Maybe one day they will ride thinking more of others.

Still a great ride. One of my favourites and I look forward to the next opportunity.

  4. @Diziet #Fyfield is my favourite #DunwichDynamo stop, too. Excellent food to set you up for a great ride through the night.

I have never ventured into the sea at the end, though. Well done!

  5. Had an excellent #DunwichDynamo at the weekend. Swam in the sea and everything. Thanks to those who I rode with :-). Thanks also to the Fyfield Scouts - easily the best pit stop.

  6. Slept 11 hours last night :-)

    #DunwichDynamo 2024 mini-retrospective/ride report

    - I thought I'd go "old school" for navigation and use the printed route sheet (had the GPX on my phone as backup). To make this work, though, you need (1) a source of light (e.g. a headtorch) to illuminate the instructions, because the moon doesn't; (2) a cycle computer or mileometer to tell you how far you've come so you know when to start looking for the next turn. As it turned out, "follow the tail lights" was a more than acceptable navigation strategy for 90% of the ride and I had gpx on my phone for backup.

    - the usb battery bank I found in a box of old bike lights was only able to get my phone from ~ 10% to 40% charged. Which was just about enough to get me home once I set it to miser rate, but maybe that's why the battery bank was in a box of old bike lights.

    - no punctures, no mechanicals. More by luck than judgement, but one previous year I had four punctures (which was more by judgement than luck: don't do an overnight bike ride on a rear tyre that's previously been on a turbo trainer)

    - stopped at a pub in Fyfield for a pint, at Moreton for a ratatouille, at (a pub not sure where) to fill my water bottle, at Needham Market for flapjack and at Gosbeck village hall for sausage roll. Perhaps I ate too much ...

    - arrived at the beach around 4:45 am (guessing from the timestamp on the above post) which is earlier than I usually do. But, I think I may have left earlier too. There is actually not a lot to do on Dunwich beach at 5am especially if you don't feel like eating anything

    - taking leg and armwarmers was a good idea even if I didn't need them on the ride, because more or less as soon as I'd stopped I became shivery and nauseous. Ginger beer for breakfast seemed to cure that. Having ridden more than 600 miles in the last six months might have prevented it, who can say?

    - doing the sums, if I'd turned around at Dunwich and ridden back at the same pace (or even a slower pace but with fewer stops) I could have been home at 2pm instead of 3pm. I wouldn't have had an hours nap on the coach, but maybe I could have that nap on the beach instead before leaving. Pondering this approach for next year.
  7. I'd have posted during the ride itself but that would have involved stopping. As you can see, my bike is two tyred to stand up.

  8. Hope that everyone riding the #DunwichDynamo tonight has a good one! Weather looks okay-ish. Say hi to the Dunwich Beach Earwigs for me.

  9. If you’re riding the #DunwichDynamo tonight, have a great time. Would be great to see some pictures on here.

Here’s Dunwich beach at around 05.00 from the last time I rode in 2022.

    woohoo!

the original plan was to have a mobile-nixos phone acting as gps / bike computer for the #DunwichDynamo tomorrow evening and I think it's probably Way Too Late to accomplish that now, but ... woohoo anyway

  12. @thechildofroth sadly no #DunwichDynamo for me this time. I’ve been fortunate to have transport home. Once I arranged a coach for a group.

I have seen some mention riding south along the coast, involving a few ferries, before picking up a train home from a better served station. Might have been Felixstowe or Harwich.

Have a great ride if you do it.

  13. @demoographics sadly not this year. My #DunwichDynamo number four will have to wait.

Have a great ride and I’m looking forward to hopefully seeing a few photos.

  14. Hey #BikeTooter are you riding #DunwichDynamo this weekend? How are you organising yourself for it? I was going to #Audax it for my RRtY but with the stress of not knowing if we'll get carriage on #GreaterAnglia down to London for the start has tipped the faff/novelty scales the wrong way and I think we're going to do a different ride this weekend 😞

I don't really understand why GA don't put on a 'DynamoExpress' to cater for all these prospective customers?

  15. Just bought my coach ticket for the return from the #DunwichDynamo bike ride :-)

(Significantly more expensive than I remember it from a couple of years ago, I have to say)

  16. @AnnaUK your bike reminds me of some very well illuminated bikes on the Dunwich Dynamo. I’m going to try and do better with my decorative lighting the next time I ride it.

  17. Finally home. Of course my bike was at the back of the van, adding an additional 40 minutes' wait. But I arrived home to cake left out for me by my lovely partner.

    Now for a nap/Rip Van Winkle re-enactment.

  18. Not quite a year ago as the date changes with the full moon but this was the end of last year’s #dunwichdynamo . Rode through the night, ate cooked breakfast and had an hour’s sleep on the beach before riding on to Norwich in 40° heat. Couldn’t make it this year but can’t wait to ride it again. #cycling #biketoot

  19. Half past four in the morning. Already daylight. Joyous vegan sausage roll at a pit stop in Gosbeck. About 50km to go until the beach. #DunwichDynamo
