  1. Hmmmm, Doom mapping is going much slower than I wanted today, and I know what the issues are.

    Firstly, my lack of knowledge on the tools is one particular road block, it doesn't help that at the moment basic rooms probably take me a little longer than necessary to make.

    Secondly, scale, my concept of scale in the editor is pretty warped. 64 units isn't that big, one of my larger rooms, is actually probably on the small side in terms of traditional Doom maps.

    Thirdly, I am trying to hard to replicate what feels like semi-real spaces with just the basic assets, I could go to Realm667 and download a bunch of assets and textures, but I know that is a typical excuse I will make to put off working on things, pretending I am working on things by searching for the right add-ons to satisfy a tiny, insignificant thing.

    Not going to drop this idea, but I just need to address these hurdles in a productive way.

    I think it is time to bust out a pencil and some paper...

  2. Things are gradually taking shape, I am going to work on the big area to the west next, the idea is to fill that with a number of buildings that can be explored.

    The size of it will probably increase to accommodate for the buildings, thankfully, it isn't too difficult to extend the boundaries of the area I have given myself!

  4. Spent way too long messing around with this room, I chopped and changed it number of times, but the base concept is there I feel.

    For context, the idea would be that after leaving the landing bay, and go through the security checkpoint, Doom Guy would make his way to this room, which functions as reception area for the facility.

    This is still in a really basic format, and I will see if I can work on some additional details and make it feel more like a semi-realistic space.

    I know traditional Doom maps don't follow rules of realism, and I will take liberties here and there, but my core tenant would be making spaces that seem mostly logical.

  5. So, I have started working on my idea for a Doom map, sadly, I don't think setting different starting spawns with difficulties will work... But that's a good thing I suppose, one less thing for me to have in the back of my mind.

    Still getting used to using SLADE 3, it's a little clunky and cumbersome, but I think with some time I will get my head around it.

    So far, I have plotted out the staging area for my first map.

    The concept is that Doom Guy is dropped off at a landing bay for a facility, going through the door there is an initial security checkpoint, through the little window I have made I intend to have wall with some computer screens on, making it look like some initial screening area after people arrive at the facility.

    But everything seems awfully quiet right now, nobody seems to be manning the security station...

    It took me way too long to get the door working, but hopefully future doors will be less problematic!

  7. 10 Line Genocide is a wacky Doom community project where each map is limited to no more than 10 linedefs!

    Mappers had to get experimental to work around this strict limitation and to come up with interesting gameplay scenarios. 230 maps by over 100 mappers, this is the biggest Doom community project ever!

    Definitely the most fun project I've contributed to. Each of my 5 maps didn't take longer than an hour to build, balance and playtest.

  14. Testing one teleport trap with a simple voodoo doll script (closed room opens up 20+ seconds after you grab the rocket launcher) in my Doom 1 slaughter map for the Cleanout community project which I feel needs to be a bit more difficult 🤔😈
