Since it’s become a bit of a common misconception, I may as well clear something up about video game mods and hacks.
Having a decomp available makes it easier to mod a game, or drastically change up its functionality.
But it’s not required. If you’re tech savvy enough and know enough assembly code, you can make equally impressive mods without one.
See Super Mario Eclipse, old Mario 64 hacks like Last Impact, Super Mario World mods in general…

Since I’ve missed #WIPWednesday the last ten-twenty weeks or so, here are a few random new pics of the Mario game mod I’ve been working on.

The legendary #Workboy found a new home!
I ported the ROM to work on the #MegaDuck laptop (a #GameBoy clone). It's not the hardware that we wanted, but...it's hardware that exists! Keyboard, Real Time Clock and all.

The funny thing about video game modding and ROM hacking is it’s basically legacy software development as a hobby.
You’re adding features and changes to a project whose original developers have long left and who basically provided no documentation at all.
In other words, it’s like a software engineering job from hell. But that challenge and awkwardness is all part of the fun…

One thing I’ve always found crazy is how much more… impressive hobbyist projects seem to be nowadays. Every time I look on Reddit, Mastodon, Twitter, BlueSky, YouTube or Discord, I see some mod or homebrew game that makes me think “how the hell is this even possible?”
Super Mario Kart remade in Super Mario World? Sure.
Minecraft in Super Mario Odyssey? Why not.
Doom on the Atari Jaguar? Sure.
Super Mario 64 on GBA? How are there 2 of these?!

So, since this has become a fairly common sight in the modding and retro gaming community…
What are your thoughts on projects using AI tools for video game mods, translations, disassemblies, PC ports, etc?
Seen a lot more translations clearly done with AI now, plus vibe coded PC ports and recomps of games like Donkey Kong 64 and Animal Crossing.
There are also modders using these tools to create assets for projects too, with differing levels of success. -

Can’t show any new levels or mechanics yet, but have some screenshots of existing levels from my SMW mod for #screenshotsaturday.

How do you get this kind of romhack working? I'm wasting an afternoon to get something going, but everything I get just crashes.
Somebody can help? Seems too much fun to try.https://invidious.tiekoetter.com/watch?v=Iney8Rs8NKQ

Sometimes I think about PDX-POM3. Not that I ever made any patches with it myself, I used flips with the IPS format for that.

For the 30 homebrews buyers ( https://itch.io/b/3695/new-8-bit-all-stars-bundle ), I thought this might be of use. I wrote a SNES gamepad patch for Crater Song ( https://orebodyinc.itch.io/crater-song ). It remaps Menuett's movements to the face buttons and moves each character's sing buttons to the shoulder buttons. You can use a SNES gamepad with Mesen or use a SNES-to-NES adapter to use it on actual NES.

I'm pretty proud of this. It's my first code-based ROM hack.

For #ScreenshotSaturday, here’s another #Zelda enemy recreation for my SMW mod. You can avoid it by going behind the background stealth wise, but it chases you and tries to one-shot you with a scythe attack if you get spotted.

So, for any game developers out there, do you use generative AI in your projects? Either for coding, art, writing or anything else?

Nevermind, I sped it up.
I might be cracked at ROM hacking after all?
...can this even be considered ROM hacking? we're bordering on Homebrew at this point. -

For today’s #WIPWednesday, a WIP level tileset some Mario fans may recognise. Well, some Mario & Luigi fans anyway.
