Am I breaking real systems just to verify #DebianInstaller's #RescueMode still works correctly?
~~You have no proof.~~
Well, now there is… https://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2025/12/msg00177.html

Today's oddity:
> The new automated install option is great; thank you.
It's been there since forever. Granted, I've only been publishing #DebianInstaller releases for 13 years.

It's been *a while* but here comes #DebianInstaller Trixie Alpha 1 finally!

That's affecting #DebianInstaller of course, here's my first look into that… https://bugs.debian.org/1037256#40

This is a documentation bug (I don't think /cdrom/ exists for mini.iso plus something strange going on in preseed.sh (https://salsa.debian.org/installer-team/preseed/-/blob/master/preseed.sh)

Final review and merge of Lukas Märdian's merge request, adding #Netplan support to #DebianInstaller → https://salsa.debian.org/installer-team/netcfg/-/merge_requests/9 (uploaded as netcfg/1.190).
Whether `netplan-generator` gets installed by default is a *different* question though, and the installer team probably won't be making that decision.

Today's challenge: #debootstrap (and #DebianInstaller as a result) vs. #britney's force-hint feature.

Lots of things going on in @debian at the moment with the ongoing 64-bit time_t transition (Y2038)…
Filed a few serious bug reports and restored an old tool to help track issues for #DebianInstaller: https://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2024/03/msg00102.html

Recap: #DebianInstaller Bookworm RC 4 was planned around end of May.
Another occurrence of #MissionAccomplished!

How is this #DebianInstaller session going, you ask? Current mood is “the SVG whisperer”.

Recap: #DebianInstaller Bookworm RC 3 was planned around mid-May.
As Ethan would say while pushing the big red button: #MissionAccomplished!
With thanks to the images team (debian-cd) and the archive team (ftp) for trusting me to handle parts of their workload, meaning a very comfortable autonomy in the release process.

@XOrgFoundation The answer is obviously: “whatever people actually doing the work are going to be working on!”
Speaking as a former X maintainer in Debian, and as someone who integrated it in the graphical installer, replacing DirectFB… Feeling a little sad to see that old friend go, not sure about the timeline in distributions, or about what (re)work will be needed in #DebianInstaller to keep a graphical version. But I'm sure we'll manage!
Full support! 💯

Guess who has two thumbs and has just sent yet another extra overlong report?

#DebianInstaller versus #UEFI and various #QEMU graphics drivers → https://bugs.debian.org/1036019

Just punted a few #DebianInstaller things until after Bookworm, feeling a little sad for the bug & patch submitter, but I'm so worried about the possible regressions in code I don't master that it seems best to pick the safest option: don't touch for the time being. 😓

This is one of the longest mails I've written during this release cycle, with lots of thinking and anticipating over the past few weeks.
Let's see if the upcoming #DebianInstaller RC 3 and RC 4 can be managed in the way I envisioned…

It's time for a new #DebianInstaller release: Debian Installer Bookworm RC 2
→ https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2023/04/msg00008.html
-
@debacle If users want to give #Bookworm a try, a #DebianInstaller Bookworm RC 2 is cooking, hopefully built and published tomorrow.
(The RC 1 is fine too if you're in a hurry, but we have squashed some more bugs since then.)
-
Getting #DebianInstaller ready for #Bookworm, current to-do list: https://salsa.debian.org/installer-team/debian-installer/-/issues/1
Each issue gets ticked as soon as good progress is made, and will be struck out once everything is confirmed and released.

I know close to nothing about PowerPC (besides having owned and used an iBook G4 a long while ago), but it seems that I have a Linux kernel fix for #DebianInstaller on #ppc64el. \o/
