Some people were surprised to find there was a large covered over tunnel below Grand Parade when the Cork Main Drainage Scheme dug up the road near Daunt Square in 2005. The street used to be part of the river, so I guess the water had to go somewhere, but it also highlights just how vulnerable the city is to high tides and climate change.

The Captain likes Diet Coke

Wearing a cap that says “Capitan”, and dressed as he is in shorts and then in a warm jumper, I had to photograph him as he stood outside McDonald’s on Daunt Square.

I’m not sure what his name is, but I’ve seen him around Cork a few times since taking this photo last year.

Remember the Shell to Sea protests that wanted to stop Shell from bringing natural gas from the Corrib Gas Field ashore. They wanted Shell to refine the gas at sea.

According to the Wikipedia page for the group, Shell exited the project in 2018.

@donncha this may or may not resonate but #DauntSquare is a place name I only know from a Microdisney compilation album and I had forgotten how much I like Microdisney and Fatima Mansions and The High Llamas so thanks for reminding me. Playlist sorted for the next few days.

Even Cork fans have to take a break and this man was enjoying his ice cream on Daunt Square, on Patrick Street, Cork back in 2006.
