  1. How are you?

I would like to say I knew the sign in the background said, “How are you?” but it’s more likely I did not. I’m glad it worked out, and it just proves that you have to be ready to take the photograph when you’re doing street photography or you’ll miss the moment. In 2004, Ireland

In 2004, Ireland was in the midst of a mobile phone boom. The average Irish person was sending lots of text messages per month. The phones of the era were mostly Nokia models and early flip phones. The iPhone wouldn’t arrive for another three years. Making an actual voice call, as this woman is doing, was still the primary use of a mobile phone, rather than the app-launching, social-media-scrolling pocket computers we carry today.

  4. The Swan Whisperer of Galway

If you’ve ever wandered down to the Claddagh in Galway, you’ll know the swans are less “graceful wild creatures” and more “assertive locals who know exactly when the bread’s coming out.”

That’s what happened on this day in 2005 when we visited and saw a young woman feeding those swans. Other birds wanted crumbs of bread too! Now we know that bread is not an ideal food for birds. Green vegetables are better for them.

  5. Adi Roche in the 2004 St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Adi Roche, the founder and voluntary CEO of Chernobyl Children International, was a prominent figure in Irish media for many years, tirelessly advocating for children affected by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Her passionate commitment to this cause left an indelible mark on countless Irish people, including myself when she visited my school in the early 1990s. Her presence was inspiring, leaving us all in awe of her dedication and humanitarian spirit.

In 2004 I photographed her on a float during the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Cork. She may have been the Marshall that year, perhaps?

  6. Some people were surprised to find there was a large covered over tunnel below Grand Parade when the Cork Main Drainage Scheme dug up the road near Daunt Square in 2005. The street used to be part of the river, so I guess the water had to go somewhere, but it also highlights just how vulnerable the city is to high tides and climate change.

  7. In 2003, the Dutch submarine, Dolfijn, or Dulfun, visited Cork for a few days. I happened to be around town and spotted it from Kennedy Quay where I’d been photographing the ships, buildings and machinery.

When it left Cork, it headed to Mallorca. September in Cork is nice, but I wouldn’t mind a few days there in October!

  8. In 2003, there wasn’t much vegetation to see on La Salle Street, but I found it at N 120 La Salle N Street according to Google Maps. The most recent photos on Google Maps show the red flowers are long gone.

You’ve probably seen the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) building in movies, such as Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Batman Begins, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and The Dark Knight.

  9. Water bouncing off apples in a sink, a little experiment I did twenty years ago in 2004. I need to do more of that.

  10. An Apple Store in Chicago, in 2003. I wandered in here while I was in the city, curious about what it would look like, as I didn’t use any Apple products at the time.

Check out those CRTs at the back of the second photo!

  11. Twenty years ago, on the streets of Chicago, I saw a carriage being pulled by a horse and a bored driver.

Today I learned while looking up more information about these trips that Chicago banned horse-drawn carriages in 2021. Prices seemed to range from $120/hour up past $500/hour.

  12. I remember visiting the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid and I loved it.

I visited Madrid in 2003 to stay with a good friend for a week.

Twenty years later and this photo is finally seeing the light of day. I love how ordinary this photo is. I wonder if that couple in the background is still together. Is the woman with the handbag still living in Madrid?

  13. Numerous boats are tied up at Navy Pier in Chicago, as well as a small U.S. Coast Guard boat.

This was away back in 2003. I have no idea what the place looks like now!
