"Expected to open in 2028, the 78,000 square metre AI factory in Makarewa was tracking to become the second single biggest user of electricity behind the aluminium smelter at Tiwai Point, near Bluff."

The #DataVampires have arrived in Aotearoa. Anyone who's reading @edzitron and others reporting critically on the "AI" con ... er ... business will know that this is all about creating speculative value for money-jugglers.

As Tech Won't Save Us (@techwontsaveus) explained in their Data Vampires series, scAmazon doesn't want to build datacentres in Aotearoa to benefit us. It's a way of mining our country for cheap renewable energy, and cheap labour (remember the infamous "Mexicans with cellphones"?). Which they can then extract from the country in the form of dollars.
Their extractive logic was laid bare when our energy prices went up, and they massively scaled back their plans.

@lightweight
> hyperscalers are a big loser... in general. The #DataVampires series @parismarx did for the Tech Won't Save Us podcast is a great exploration of this;

The websites we visit and the apps we use remain largely infested by #DataVampires

Coda:
Dan McQuillan, a lecturer at Goldsmiths University, doesn't mince words when describing the implications of all this;
"'AI' has a tendency towards fascistic solutionism."

"So given that we're clearly on a trajectory to have games that are indistinguishable from reality... and there would probably be billions of... computers... boxes, it would seem to follow that the odds that we're in base reality is one in billions."
#MelonHusk, 2016
"Can you imagine that as recently as a few years ago, people used to sit around and nod along as they listened to this... bullshit?"

Paris Marx makes pretty much this point in episode 3 of Data Vampires;

Listening to the first episode of a Tech Won't Save Us podcast subseries, called Data Vampires;

Once again it occurs to me that hyperscaling of datacentres is exactly the wrong approach to hosting online services. Not just from an economic justice and environmental POV, but even from a business POV.

NHS data breach: trusts shared patient details with Facebook without consent

Apps on app stores that state 'Free. Contains Ads' - one of the most meaningless statements.
Imagine if it said "Contains #DataVampires that will feed on data about how you use the app"

Hello @[email protected] what a veritable example of dark patterns and privacy eroding practices
Hello @[email protected] given the numbers of folks using the app isn't it an issue that warrants a review ..

🤔
An consent management tool from the school of #DataVampires (I can hear the CMPs wail “it’s not us it’s the publisher”)Consent my derrière. Defaults off but there’s the legitimate interests to navigate

Dear @iomnewspapers I’m glad trust is important to you but your cookie notice / practice isn’t especially trustworthy. Does anyone at the newspaper really believe that notice communicates the #DataVampires behind that notice? ‘Learn more’ is more of a #DarkPattern .. it’s infested with DataVampires
Then there’s that ‘consent is not always required’ & so I might be ‘opted in’ via legitimate interests. What the heck?
