  1. Locked In, Locked Out - Apple's Walled Garden Should Come With Liability

Apple locks five operating systems against any independent audit while claiming its review keeps users safe. If nobody can verify what apps do with our data then the liability should be Apple's.

  2. Using Claude to reclaim privacy by replacing mobile apps

Mobile apps have ignored privacy law for two decades. With Claude Code and a local docker server I am replacing them with private PWAs that keep everything on my own network.

  8. Chat Control 1.0 is moving back towards EU law, but it is not final yet.

It would again allow some providers to voluntarily scan private communications for child sexual abuse material and suspected grooming. Parliament seeks to exclude end-to-end encrypted messages; the Council must now accept or reject that amendment.

Child protection matters. So do privacy, encryption and due process.

  11. 🔻 Today's vote on #ChatControl 1.0 marks a disappointing step backwards.

The European Parliament has approved the revival of the interim #ePrivacy derogation, despite having rejected a virtually identical proposal only a few months ago.

  13. The 415 - the MEPs who let Chat Control through, and the lobbyists in their diaries

Yesterday 331 MEPs voted to bring Chat Control back under an urgency procedure the President should never have allowed. Here is every one of the 415 who did not oppose it, with their voting records and every lobbyist they have met.

  14. CSA Survivor Pleads with EU Officials to block Chat Control vote

A child abuse survivor urges MEPs to reject Chat Control — mass scanning won't protect children, and it breaks the encryption survivors need to safely report abuse.

  15. The United Nations runs Google's ad-tech on its own website, without consent, while telling the rest of us to account for AI's footprint

The UN demands AI accountability while running Google ad-tech, analytics and tracking on its own website - with no consent and a measurable, avoidable carbon cost.

  18. CIPA and the Environmental Crimes Directive: why forensic web evidence just became the most contested thing in privacy litigation

CIPA wiretapping claims and the new EU Environmental Crimes Directive have one thing in common: they are won and lost on forensic evidence of what a website actually does at runtime. Inbound demand for that evidence has ou…

  20. Google quietly removes the on-device AI privacy assurance from Chrome's Settings UI

Google has quietly removed the privacy assurance from Chrome's on-device AI Settings UI. The sentence promising that the model runs locally without sending data to Google's servers has been deleted, and the toggle moved out of the System block to reduce the chance the change is noticed. There are three plausible reasons for tha…

  21. Google's "Boss" of Chrome gaslights on unlawful Nano push

Google's Chrome boss Parisa Tabriz tells the press that users can simply opt out of the unsolicited Gemini Nano install. Google's own Chrome manifest proves the opposite. Chrome reached into the device, flipped the flag, downloaded the 4 GB model and only then surfaced the settings UI after the fact. Opt-out is not the legal standard here — opt-in is. This piec…

  22. The problem with Consent Management Platforms is they are unlawful by design

Every CMP I have looked at in fifteen years sets a cookie before the user has consented to anything. That is a direct breach of Article 5(3) of the ePrivacy Directive, restated by the CJEU in Planet49 (C-673/17), and reinforced by the Belgian decision against the IAB TCF. This piece explains, step by step, what a lawful consent…

Google Chrome is downloading a 4 GB Gemini Nano model onto users' machines without consent, with no opt-in, no opt-out short of enterprise tooling, and an automatic re-download every time the user deletes it. The pattern is…

  27. 1/4 ⛔ The Council has failed to reach an agreement on the #DataOmnibus.

A group of Member States — including Germany, Italy, Poland, Sweden, Denmark, the Czech Republic and Austria — pushed to postpone the discussion and blocked agreement on the latest Council text.

🚦 After months of negotiations, it seems that powerful corporations are succeeding in putting pressure on the Council to weaken #GDPR and #ePrivacy protections even further.
