When Edward III, in 1346, was trying to reach Calais, he found himself trapped between the sea, the French army and the River Somme.
A French captive made the king aware that there was a ford named Blanchetaque (so named for the white stones lining the river's bed) just a few miles away from the camp.
As a reward, the prisoner was made free and given 100 golden coins. King Edward and his army then crossed the River Somme and the next day fought (and won) the battle of Crécy.
The French captive (or so the story says) was called Gobin Agache and lived in the village of Mons-Boubert (which is the place I live in).
The people living in this village have since been nicknames "the traitors of Mons"
It is said that close to the church of Mons-Boubert, there is a place where nettles grow and always will, no matter what anyone could try to get rid of them. This is the place where Gobin Agache, "the traitor", is supposed to be buried.
