#USA #California #CJPA #Journalism #News #Media #Google #BigTech #AI: "In short, before anyone really knew what was happening, the CJPA, a bill that was intended to provide much-needed structural relief for local journalism and place a serious check on Google’s monopoly power, and that had passed the California Assembly with supermajority and bipartisan support, wound up getting gutted and replaced by a weird backroom deal between Google, legislators, and major news publishers—without any actual journalists involved in the process. The deal effectively transformed legislation with real teeth into a 5-year “public-private partnership” that, for a reason that no one has yet been able to explain, includes millions in funding for an “AI accelerator.” It’s a disaster."

"#Newsom, everyone knows, has national political ambitions…he just doesn’t want to piss off Google.
So, #Google’s total opposition and Newsom’s veto threat meant #CJPA had nowhere to go. But that’s when things got really strange. Without telling the NewsGuild, the union of news media workers…cut the backroom deal.
Not only was the bill gutted, with Google ponying up just a fraction of what it would have been made to, but it included funding for an “AI accelerator”."

Of course they do! What prisoner won’t try to curry favor with the jailer holding the keys? For that matter, what jailer won’t fall prey to a the prisoner’s seduction?
Unregulated #surveillancecapitalism corrupts us all.
I don’t know the provisions of the #CJPA well enough (yet) to comment directly.
Google’s recent threat to curtail their investment in the “news ecosystem” shows their leader’s willingness to put profit over probity.

American Publishers Angered that Google Can Also Lobby Politicians
American publishers are on their own quest to freeload off of platforms, but are upset that the platforms are also lobbying.
It's a debate that is seemingly mirroring Canada. American publishers are pushing for a link tax bill, claiming that linking is stealing content. Th

Really pleased that @mmasnick mentioning Freezenet in his recent article about the #CJPA: https://www.techdirt.com/2023/10/02/canadas-online-news-act-c-18-has-been-an-unmitigated-disaster-why-does-california-still-want-to-move-forward-with-its-version/
The Online News Act has been a nightmare for the journalism sector here in Canada. Next year, #California will likely move ahead with its own version of this link tax law. Canada's media may be crashing and burning because of this poor decision making that allowed this law to come to be, but California still has a shot at averting disaster here and pulling back from the brink.

the "California Journalism Protection Act" has problems, but imho it's important to come up with better alternatives.
(#CJPA is worse than a lot of things, but better than doing nothing)
Here's a short thread with some more productive alternatives. CJPA kind of reminds me of PPP, a flawed solution to a real problem, that was probably a little better than nothing but worse than other options
