  11. CW: Long thread/11

Meanwhile, the proposed US version, #JCPA, has a payout schedule based on the number of clicks a news outlet generates for each platform - a metric that will see the lion's share of money going to the far-right clickbait sites that push conspiracy theories, disinformation, and culture-war nonsense - and see floods of social media traffic as a result.

  15. The #JCPA failed last Congress because lawmakers failed to address serious #FirstAmendment, #ContentModeration, and #competition concerns. CCIA urges Congress to reject this re-introduced bill.

  16. *if you still have one.

Part of getting out from under our #disinformation society is rebuilding local news. Sometimes that news is owned by conglomerates, but if they are serving your community, you must support them. Information is everything when suffering through an information war. We need to pass the Local Journalism Sustainability Act in the next Congress #LJSA (NOT #JCPA) #SaveLocalNews

  28. A lot of folks in my TL are busily badmouthing the #JCPA, the legislation stalled in Congress that would force Google and FB to pay news orgs.

I have a few thoughts, and also a request.

First, the request: Do some reporting. 1/

  32. And Sen. Klobuchar is right. The local-news crisis is real. But positioning the #JCPA as its solution has proven not only to be wrong but a colossal distraction when there are far better ways to put reporters on local beats and promote the sort of accountability journalism that's missing from far too many American communities.

  34. Here's our STATEMENT on the #JCPA being removed from the #NDAA. Now it's time for Dems to deliver on their promise to rein in #BigTech. #AICOA and #OAMA are the only tech bills left standing. Schumer is out of excuses. Put them up for a vote! fightforthefuture.org/news/202

  36. To expand on what I wrote ☝️ about the #JCPA, here's a great article on why even most *journalists* were opposed to this bill - freepress.net/blog/jcpa-myths-

While the desire of encouraging local journalism is a good one, the reality is that this bill seems to play right into the desires of the lobbyists of the large publishers and hedge fund owners (who are actually *destroying* journalism, in my opinion).

  38. The #JCPA has lots of opponents and, in a rare case of true balance, they come from right and left-- because it's truly terrible legislation.
