A lot of folks in my TL are busily badmouthing the #JCPA, the legislation stalled in Congress that would force Google and FB to pay news orgs.

I have a few thoughts, and also a request.

First, the request: Do some reporting. 1/

Two pending bills, #KOSA and #JCPA, both violate the First Amendment and would make the Internet less safe for everyone.

And Sen. Klobuchar is right. The local-news crisis is real. But positioning the #JCPA as its solution has proven not only to be wrong but a colossal distraction when there are far better ways to put reporters on local beats and promote the sort of accountability journalism that's missing from far too many American communities.

While the desire of encouraging local journalism is a good one, the reality is that this bill seems to play right into the desires of the lobbyists of the large publishers and hedge fund owners (who are actually *destroying* journalism, in my opinion).

The #JCPA has lots of opponents and, in a rare case of true balance, they come from right and left-- because it's truly terrible legislation.
