  6. We'd love to see some of the ambiguity removed from the responses to the Census question on religion -- and what better way to do this than by the addition of a yes/no filter question?

The ABS is proposing a change to the religion question for the 2026 Census to establish whether someone actually has a religion before asking about their religious beliefs.

The ABS is seeking public feedback on this proposal by Friday 8 September.

Let the ABS know that you support the addition of a filter question!

  10. The response from the ABS to phase 1 of the 2026 Census review -- to which the NSL made a submission as part of the Census21 campaign -- indicates they may consider a yes/no filter question for religious data collection.

This change makes sense in terms of data collection accuracy and is something that pro-secular groups have been campaigning for for many years.

Are you enjoying wildly speculating on Advancing #Secularisation as a result of responses to the limited questioning in the 2021 Census? Well, you're wrong, and here's Dr Andrew Harvey, a #ReligiousStudies academic (NOT a Theologian or a Minister of Religion), explaining what's wrong with this overly simplistic approach:

We're shedding the weight of religion. About time. Not as fast as I would like it, but in the right direction.
    Good news.

    >The number who said they had #no_religion increased to 37.2% of the population, up from a quarter.
