  1. I've just started reading #AnotherEngland by #CarolineLucas and this #Guardian article about #England and Englishness is very timely. Independence for the countries of the UK is very much on the table IMO and redefining Englishness is part of this. This's the place where the future of UK politics will be contested.

  2. Ahead of her speaking tour of Edinburgh & Glasgow, Caroline Lucas writes in The National on what she has learned about combating the far right, and how the prospect of independence for Scotland and Wales means that England must redefine itself.

  3. @jaygooby thrilling. #ZackPolanski and #CarolineLucas were full of positivity at the sold out podcast recording at The Dome in #Brighton this week.

  4. This is a much-more media friendly, soundbitey speech than we are used to seeing from a #GPEW leader. Even #CarolineLucas speeches were a bit more policy-and-accomplishments focused, rather than this quite fiery, build-to-the-applause moments, orchestrated speech from #ZackPolanski .

Prescient words from former Green MP Caroline Lucas in Another England, published this year before the far right English riots.

  6. 2. How many of the #greens' expected 0-4 MPs could they get?

For a while they've had 1 MP, the exceedingly popular #CarolineLucas in #BrightonPavilion. But when she stepped down, could anyone else win it?

They have also been targeting #BristolCentral for a while, and then had some muted hopes about #NorthHerefordshire and #WaveneyValley.

The #ExitPoll had them winning 2 seats, which sounded like solid going given the circumstances.

But now the count has come in, they've won all four!

  7. #CarolineLucas: #Labour must pursue #SocialJustice while tackling #ClimateCrisis

Outgoing #Green MP calls for combined strategy to ensure #NetZero will not be done ‘on the backs of the poor’

#HomeInsulation was one example, where if a #MinimumEnergyEfficiencyStandard were enforced on #landlords then #tenants would have warmer homes, less energy waste and lower emissions.' [& lower bills]

  8. As well as #CarolineLucas we're also losing the excellent #MhairiBlack from the UK House of Commons this year. Very sad that MPs who are genuinely ploughing their own furrows, unafraid to say things that others shy away from, are leaving after 10 or so years in politics

  9. ‘They’re patronising, arrogant …’ #CarolineLucas on fighting the #Tories, leading the #Greens and leaving #parliament

‘When you look at what the government is doing, it’s so demoralising.’

After 14 years, the Green party’s sole MP will stand down at the next election. She talks about her successes, her failures, her hopes for #England – and her new career as an end-of-life #doula

The Green party politician offers ways in which we might express an English identity that would lead to a more #inclusive and #progressive land

Personally i specifically avoid reading muddling media. #DumpTheGuardian

Yet, Thanks to your mention i found a joyful assessment:

"Lucas’s captivating book examines the more uplifting aspects of the nation’s past such as English people's progressive spirit, radical inclusivity and ancient commitment to nature to envisage where we might go from here."

  12. "Is it the case... that the left in general has just ceded this ground. We've become so squeamish about talking about England, and therefore the only people who do talk about England are the exceptionalists, those who are peddling imperial nostalgia and Brexit."

  13. "You might have had [Nigel Farage] in Parliament [if UK elections used Proportional Representation], but I think what would have happened is the more you would have actually looked at [UKIP] policies, rather than his, kind of, martyred self-image on the outside of Parliament, you might just find that actually some of his popularity went down."

  14. CW: UKPol: why do MPs stand down? Good set of interviews by Rachel Cooke.

A large number of MPs won't stand again at the next election. In some cases the reasons are obvious, but there are other, more subtle factors at work.

Excellent piece by Rachel Cooke in the Observer, based on interviews with MPs from all parties. Thoughtful writing: nuanced & genuinely insightful.

"What Britain got was a masterclass in gaslighting. Sunak’s performance made a new art form of rank hypocrisy, as he pretended not to know that the very extremism he criticised was being actively driven by his party and peddled in his speech."

  21. Bunch of sad news today: #MhairiBlack resigning as an MP at the next election - very sad, she's another of the MPs I actually have time for, like #CarolineLucas; and the end of the #ExperimentBar the collab between two of my favourite breweries #VerdantBrewing and #PressureDropBrewing

  22. 'The gaslighting of a nation has finally come to an end',

says #CarolineLucas (Green Party MP) in the debate in the House of Commons about its #PrivilegesComittee report on whether #BorisJohnson has consistently lied at every opportunity and should be suspended for 90 days, as recommended by the committee.

Johnson leaked the recommendations of the committee in advance, and announced his immediate resignation as MP for Uxbridge.

  23. Caroline Lucas is standing down as an MP in the next election. I agree with Richard Murphy, she has been a force for good in the sewer that is Tory dominated British politics.
