Interesting in the wake of the Capital Public Radio financial train wreck to see the #sacbee and #Sacramento State discover that students don't benefit from the KXJZ license or participate in the station in any meaningful way.
Here's a story I did... 20 years ago (?!) about just that very thing.

Much has changed since then. That was before CapRadio launched "Insight" and lots of other good stuff. But much is the same, especially the building of expensive new buildings and leaving students out of the picture.
My suggestion? There's a new #LPFM window opening next month.

CSUS/CapRadio should try for a license for KSSU and also do a "KSSU on CapRadio" show. Also bring back Hey Listen, KZAP (on CapRadio) and Blues Party. And stop building new buildings and mismanaging funds, obvs.

I knew it. This is the other shoe drop I was waiting for. CapRadio has been financially mismanaged. Expansion to a costly new facility and event space downtown is part of the problem.
Sac State University is now taking the station into financial receivership, basically. This does not affect the programming side—which has problems of its own that have not been addressed (alienating audience by layoffs of popular on-air talent w/no warning).

Yikes. It would be nice to hear from some actual CapRadio folks about this audit and takeover by #SacramentoState. Given that Wood/Karlo started firing people as soon as they arrived on the scene, CSUS taking over the station seems like a scary proposition.
On the other hand, gratifying to see the auditors call out CapRadio for shutting students out programming/involvement with the station. That should have been addressed long ago.

So many upsetting details in this #sacbee story. What the fuck are we doing here? What is the point of supporting our "local" #Sacramento #publicradio station (chain) if you're just going to gut it and make it a super expensive podcast player?
"Brunner and Newhouse were told that the station was trying to reduce the number of 'live voices' on air."
"In an email to The Bee, Karlo said that the board and management were 'guided by audience data in these decisions.'"
"Karlo started at CapRadio eight days before the layoffs, summoned by his friend Luke Wood, the new president of Sacramento State."
"In March, the Sacramento Business Journal reported that CapRadio was tapping into operating reserve funds in order to pay for loans taken out for the construction of its new downtown headquarters....The station also tapped into employees’ health care funds, cutting coverage of premiums."

Well this absolutely fucking sucks. I'm very sorry for Nick and other folks who have been such important creative voices at CapRadio for so long and are being dumped so suddenly. (Mick Martin's show has been on at least since the 90s...).

#CapRadio spins this as merely separating news from music (the laid-off hosts all had Saturday music programs, there is a second music station), but as @kristinslam reports, "the layoffs also included news hosts...the station plans to pre-record hosts ahead of time and automate voicing with playlists." This is a clean sweep of local voices on #PublicRadio in #Sacramento. I pulled my Evergreen funding, because what am I supporting? I can give my money straight to NPR and listen via streaming.

They announced the layoffs on the Friday before a holiday weekend—now there's courage for you. The laid-off employees found out only two days earlier. They didn't even have a chance to say goodbye to their listeners. I only found out when I tuned in to listen to the fabulous Mick Martin's Blues Party and instead heard the voice of Shankar Vedantum. Five hours of programming has been replaced by repeated NPR shows. Not new programming—just repeats.

Kristin Lam wrote this courageous piece about sudden stealth layoffs by Capital Public Radio in #Sacramento of local on-air talent on its news station. The station now has only one local program left. It's a radically wrong-headed move by an INTERIM General Manager who started only two weeks earlier. Corporate assassination of local media doesn't stop at public radio. Meanwhile, the manager class at CapRadio sits fat and sassy.
