¿Sabían que la famosa marca de autos de lujo Cadillac nació directamente de las cenizas de un fracaso de Henry Ford?
En marzo de 1902, Henry Ford tuvo serios desacuerdos con sus inversionistas y decidió abandonar la Henry Ford Company, que era su segundo intento de consolidar una fábrica de autos en la industria estadounidense. Ante la salida del famoso constructor, los socios financieros de la empresa, William Murphy y Lemuel Bowen, decidieron cerrar el negocio de forma definitiva y llamaron al ingeniero y fabricante de maquinaria Henry Leland con el único propósito de evaluar el valor de los talleres y las herramientas para proceder a su liquidación.
Lejos de preparar el remate de los activos, Leland revisó las instalaciones y convenció a los inversionistas de que era un grave error tirar la toalla en ese momento. El ingeniero les propuso continuar con la fabricación de automóviles utilizando los chasis que Ford ya había diseñado, pero sustituyendo los motores por un nuevo propulsor monocilíndrico de alta precisión que él mismo había desarrollado en sus talleres. Los socios aceptaron la propuesta y el 22 de agosto de 1902 reorganizaron el negocio bajo el nombre de Cadillac Automobile Company, bautizándola así en honor al explorador francés Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac, quien fundó la ciudad de Detroit en 1701.
