  12. Near the top of Trump’s agenda next year is extending his 2017 tax cuts.

He will most likely need to reduce spending elsewhere to do that.

    Clean energy tax credits
    — worth about $350 billion over just the next three years, according to the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation
    — would be a tempting target.

The more those subsidies are pared, the more projects would no longer make financial sense.

Since the election, renewable energy backers have drawn some hope from the knowledge that funding leveraged by the 2022 law has disproportionately flowed toward Republican states,
    potentially shielding it from cuts.

Energy demand has also started rising for the first time in a generation with the growth of electric vehicles, heat pumps, new factories and artificial intelligence, bolstering the case for an expansive approach to energy sources.

And solar energy, in particular, is now one of the cheapest forms of power available.

“Renewable energy has a certain bipartisan support,” said Nils Rode,
the chief investment officer of Schroders Capital,
a Swiss firm that manages $97 billion, including wind farms in the United States.

“Even though there might be risks, we don’t believe it will lead to major changes.”

Subsidies aren’t the only policy with the potential to affect the flow of money, however.

Mr. Trump and his team have made it clear they wish to ease the path of fossil fuel projects in ways that could make them more attractive to investors

His candidate for interior secretary, Doug #Burgum,
has promised to open up more federal lands to oil and gas drilling.

Chris #Wright, the fracking company chief executive whom Mr. Trump picked to lead the Energy Department, could redirect the agency’s vast research agenda and loan programs away from low-carbon electricity.

At the Environmental Protection Agency, the president-elect intends to nominate Lee #Zeldin, who has discussed rolling back rules on power plant emissions, which would weaken incentives for utilities to shift to cleaner sources of electricity.

All of those actions would increase the return on fossil fuel investments relative to renewable ones.

  13. BETRAYED!!!

Well, even though #DougBurgum will want to #DrillBabyDrill, #DebHaaland advocated for that as well. In the past, #Burgum had done some good stuff with regards to #NativeAmerican rights in his state of #NorthDakota. However, some #TribalLeaders are in the pockets of #BigOilAndGas and other #extractive industries -- so that needs to change on a #FirstNation by First Nation basis!

North Dakota tribal leaders see Burgum as an ally in Interior, energy role

    By: Mary Steurer - November 15, 2024

"This past June, Burgum acknowledged at an event that relations between the state and tribes were at a low point when he took office in 2016. At the time, protests against the #DakotaAccessPipeline in southern #NorthDakota were ongoing, involving thousands of demonstrators who flocked to the state to camp in solidarity with the #StandingRockSioux Tribe in opposition to the pipeline.

"Burgum said one of the first things he did as governor was reach out to Dave Archambault, chair of Standing Rock at the time, and offer to come meet with tribal leaders.

"'That’s where we were starting from: with a commitment to each other to listen to each other,' Burgum said during this year’s Strengthening Government to Government conference, an annual event started under his leadership that brings together state and tribal leaders.

"U.S. Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., said he thinks Burgum’s experience working with North Dakota tribal leaders makes him a good fit for leading Interior. He characterized the current #BIA as unresponsive and bureaucratic."

    #DemocracyNow, November 18, 2024

"As we broadcast all week from the #COP29 talks in #Azerbaijan, we look at what Donald Trump’s reelection as U.S. president means for the #climate. #CleanEnergy and #environmental advocates are raising alarm over Trump’s picks for key roles in his administration, including #fracking magnate #ChrisWright to serve as energy secretary and #NorthDakota Governor #DougBurgum to lead the #InteriorDepartment, where he could greatly expand #drilling on #FederalLands. #Burgum, a major ally of the #FossilFuel industry, was also tapped to head a newly created #NationalEnergyCouncil aimed at increasing oil and gas production.

"For more on the #WhiteHouse transition, we speak with #ManishBapna, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council [#NRDC] and Natural Resources Defense Council Action. He calls Trump’s picks 'deeply troubling' but says there is still room for optimism. 'The clean energy transition in the United States is unstoppable. It’s going to hit some speed bumps now, but it will move forward,' says Bapna."

  16. "The mechanics of how we’ve done things in North Dakota don’t really make sense from an ethics standpoint."
—Scott Skokos, executive director of Dakota Resource Council

When Republican #Kelly #Armstrong filed his federal financial disclosure after being elected to Congress in 2018, he revealed his 👉 extensive ties to the oil and gas industry in his home state of North Dakota.
💥It detailed his income from hundreds of oil wells and his financial relationship with two of the state’s largest oil producers.
⚠️ Those ties will matter a great deal if, as is likely, he’s elected as North Dakota’s governor next month.
Under North Dakota’s system, he will automatically chair two state bodies that regulate the energy industry, meaning 💥Armstrong would be expected to preside over decisions that directly impact companies in which he has financial or familial ties.
🆘As head of both the North Dakota Industrial Commission and the Land Board, Armstrong would have a nearly unmatched level of control and oversight compared with leaders in other states.

The former state senator would help set policy at a time when North Dakota
    — the No. 3 oil producer in the nation
    — is entering a new phase of energy development.
The Industrial Commission has faced criticism in recent years from landowners and legislators, including for being too supportive of corporate interests.

Armstrong wrote in an email, in response to questions from the North Dakota Monitor and ProPublica, that ♦️he earns nearly all of his personal income from the oil and gas industry.
♦️In 2022, Armstrong received up to $50,000 in royalty income from Hess Corp.
    — a company that has been the subject of 14 votes by one of those bodies in recent years and is likely to be discussed by the boards in the years to come.
♦️Similarly, an oil and gas company run by Armstrong’s father had been part of a yearslong, multicompany dispute with the Land Board, which oversees state-owned lands and minerals.
Most entities, including his father’s company, have reached negotiated settlements.
The man Armstrong seeks to succeed, Gov. #Doug #Burgum, has voted about 20 times on issues related to companies with which he has a financial relationship, according to a review of minutes from the Industrial Commission, which is responsible for energy regulation and oversight of state-owned businesses.
That includes Continental Resources, one of the region’s largest producers.

⭐️These votes were made under North Dakota’s ethics rules, which are significantly weaker than those in other states.

❌Board members have discretion to decide whether they have a conflict of interest, and the boards are effectively self-policing on this front.

    ❌The state’s Ethics Commission has created conflict-of-interest rules, but it can only take action if a complaint is filed;
it also has not implemented consequences for violating those rules.

🔥Most ethics experts contacted for this article said that royalty owners voting on matters involving companies they receive income from is problematic.

  17. #Burgum, now a surrogate for the #OrangeHitler Campaign, claimed on #FnS that "If you want to see the [#Israeli] #hostages returned, vote for Pres. T****. Just like we saw when #Iran released the hostages the day #Reagan took office."

This is an absurd #ReaganLegacyProject claim they've been spreading for decades that Iran was "terrified" of him.

No. Iran released the hostages ONLY b/c #Reagan made a backroom deal with them promising #ArmsForHostages if they held onto them till he took office.

  18. Trump’s unqualified VP faves might mean a Palin redux for the GOP

Felon and former president Donald Trump will choose a vice president within the next couple of weeks.

    The two leading contenders
    — North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and Sen. J.D. Vance (Ohio)
    — are so spectacularly unqualified that the comparison to Sarah Palin, John McCain’s running mate in 2008, is unavoidable.

That was the last time the GOP presidential ticket had someone so manifestly inexperienced and wacky in the No. 2 spot.

Considering Trump’s age and deterioration, his No. 2, realistically, might have to step into the top job one day.
That makes the selection much more than a D.C. parlor game.

    So who are these guys?

Like Mike Pence, #Burgum
    — a White, older man without much charisma
    — would not upstage Trump.
    But make no mistake:
Pence had national experience and foreign policy credentials.

Burgum’s qualifications, to put it mildly, are not impressive. (He’s very rich, however, which is what impresses Trump.)

Burgum is serving his second term as governor of an overwhelmingly White state (83 percent identified as “White only” in the most recent census), ranked 47th in population.

Hailing from a sparsely populated, largely rural state dependent on fossil fuels,
he has no exposure to the lives and concerns of vast numbers of Americans and no familiarity with the plethora of issues that would land on his desk should he have to take over for Trump.
While richer and better educated, Burgum would be very much in the Palin tradition, absent the lively personality.

By comparison, #Vance makes Burgum seem like a solid choice.
In only his second year in any political office, Vance has not a single significant accomplishment in public life.

Worse, he might be the most egregiously dishonest MAGA figure on Trump’s short list.
His willingness to embrace MAGA conspiracies and peddle dangerous schemes might be what endears him to Trump.
(On the downside for Republicans, Vance, who at 39 years old is half Trump’s age, might accentuate just how elderly Trump is.)

Whether carrying water for Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the war in Ukraine,
or minimizing the loathsomeness of antisemite Nick Fuentes,
or embracing the “big lie” that the 2020 election was stolen,
or insisting that Trump deserves absolute immunity,
Vance gives pandering a bad name.

He has expressly stated that, unlike Pence, he would have thrown the election to Trump in 2020.

It’s rare that a vice-presidential candidate so clearly renounces in advance the oath he would take

  19. Fundraising ability will be a key factor in Donald #Trump's choice for his running mate, Republican sources tell Axios.

Whoever Trump picks, raising cash will be one of the would-be VP's top assignments for the rest of the campaign.

Clicking with Trump, and skill on TV, remain essential prerequisites.

And although the campaign has received waves of donations since Trump was convicted, money is still a priority.

That helps explain why several of the top contenders to be Trump's VP pick
    — namely North Dakota Gov. Doug #Burgum, Sen. Tim #Scott (R-S.C.) and Sen. J.D. #Vance (R-Ohio)
    — have been particularly active on the fundraising circuit lately.

The Trump-controlled Republican National Committee has been hashing out a fundraising plan for his eventual VP pick, Axios has learned.
The RNC's finance team has been meeting every Wednesday to discuss vice presidential fundraising, a person familiar with the committee's planning tells Axios.

There are plans for Trump and his VP pick to host a reception in Milwaukee on July 17, during the Republican National Convention, that will be called the "Strength in Unity Reception."

The event will raise money for the Trump 47 Committee, the Save America PAC, the RNC and state Republican parties, in that order of priority.

Trump has said he'll announce his running mate soon, and the RNC's plans suggest he'll have done so by July 17, the third day of the convention.

Last night, Trump attended a Cleveland fundraiser organized by #Vance and Ohio nursing home developer Brian #Colleran that brought in more than $5.5 million, according to a person familiar with the event.

#Vance has been lobbying some of the heaviest hitters in Silicon Valley to back Trump and set up a fundraising dinner with tech entrepreneur David #Sacks in San Francisco.

  20. @Centurion480 Sorry, friend. Wrong state.
    Blame #SouthDakota for #Noem. Blame #NorthDakota for #Burgum.
    Let's get this straight, people!
