  1. RE: klezmor.im/@carkner/1153911631

bumped into a lefty yiddish-interested friend at a party last nite who I haven't talked to in a few months and was rambling about how Montreal Jewish Public Library has a very fragile paper copy of this book and how wowed I was to see it 2 months back. 😍

  2. 'In her new book, Molly Crabapple brings to life the extraordinary story of the secular #JewishLaborBund, which was active in #EasternEurope beginning in 1897 and continued its work into the 1930s. The #Bundists sought dignity and equality “here where we live,” not in a distant homeland.'

  6. My once and future collaborator Chaia is offering this 3-part online course:
"This class explores the tradition of Yiddish revolutionary folksong. Emerging from the revolutionary movements of early 20th century Eastern Europe, these songs carried the voices of workers and cultural activists who used them as tools of anti-fascist resistance, anti-Zionist organizing, and visions of Jewish communal identity."

  7. I've been researching old Bundist songs for a workshop for a few weeks now and I can't believe I didn't know about this book till now. Arbeyt un Frayhayt, a collection of #Yiddish revolutionary, workers and folk songs mostly dating to 1903-05, published by Schmul Lehman in Warsaw in 1921.

  9. The Jewish Labor Bund was a socialist movement in Tsarist Russia that opposed Zionism and believed in fighting for one's political rights in one's own country, together with workers of all backgrounds. This is the side of Jewish history that Israel has tried to suppress.
