Bill C-9 nears its final vote and royal assent. There is still time to express opposition and to seek reconsideration or withdrawal, but time is short. In addition to @Gigi 's post I also read statements of opposition from CCLA, CLC, and BDS Coalition. I will be contacting my MP with the following, and I offer it freely for public use

So I definitively abandoned that article I was writing about Bill C-9 a few months ago because I am just too busy to finish it properly.
I did, however, want to post it somewhere where it could be read and indexed, since it was already a lot of effing work, so: reddit it is.

For one thing, I would like to have got more into the issue of it relying in old hate symbols and ignoring that fascists are always evolving, but it's already long.

For example, addressing the antisemitism present in the CBC should not immediately or exclusively lead to calls for defunding the CBC, nor should the antisemitism shown in unions be used exclusively as a call to weaken collective bargaining or worker's rights.
Political moves like the above reduce Jews to political pawns and reduce Jewish suffering to a political issue, one that can be leveraged or traded.
Many Jews such as myself as politically homeless. While many of us (including myself) identify as liberal or left leaning, the events in the last 10 (and especially 3) years have taught us a painful lesson.about who we can trust.
If you want us on your side, you need to show you care about us as people.

The Conservatives say that Bill C-9 is unnecessary at best and harmful at worst as it could empower hate groups to misuse the justice system to harm Jewish Canadians.
I accept the premise of concern, but where I push back is the idea of "So we should do nothing."
Canadian Conservatives have publicly spoken up against antisemitism in Canada and been vocal in their criticism of the situation of rising hate during the Liberal governments.
If the Conservatives wish to take up the cudgel of addressing antisemitism in Canada, that needs to come with concrete plans that address the real concerns presented by Jewish leaders and local law enforcement and politicians who have expressed being limited by current laws.
