  1. We are touched by the kindness and generosity of Outbound Lighting. Having such extraordinary bike lights isn’t possible for everyone who bikes, including many youth participants in our cycling education activities. But it is for two more, thanks to Outbound's thoughtful gift on April 13 of a Portal Wireless Helmet Light outboundlighting.com/collectio and a Trail Evo Wireless Handlebar Light. outboundlighting.com/products/ Muchas gracias, Outbound! And BTW, Penny sure is a cute shop dog: outboundlighting.com/pages/abo.

  2. Sometimes people don’t use the bike lights legally required in their locale because they don’t know the laws (e.g., for California, bikemonterey.org/wp-content/up). Other times, there are other reasons—in some cases, it’s that their family budget hasn’t allowed purchasing a reliable light.

Our gratitude to Shawna Wagner and Patrick Presco of NiteRider for contributing on April 13 a Lumina Micro 650 Front Bike Light. niterider.com/products/6784-lu This allowed us to gift the light to a court-referred Salinas Valley teen participating in Bicycling Monterey’s project Alternatives to Fines for Traffic Citations. Thank you, NiteRider! niterider.com/

  3. When a widely renowned Monterey County business, Light & Motion, ceased operations this year after 35 years, we became eager to know of other reliable lights for cycling.

That’s why we checked out the new KOM Cycling Quick Release 1000 lumen light. We do a lot of night riding, including on dark rural roads, and we appreciate this degree of brightness! It's also available as a 350 lumen light. Each has 6 operating modes—3 steady and 3 flashing, including an SOS light.

Concerned about bike light theft while parked? The light is very easy to detach and take with you.

Those of you using Garmin & Wahoo devices will appreciate that these lights come with the needed hardware to ensure compatibility with Garmin and Wahoo mounts and computers.
