  1. Despite the shorter days in mid #Autumn, #November is quite a good time for #cycling if the weather is settled. The only extra thing you need to remember is to bring your #BikeLights with you. Today, for example, it was a dull, overcast day but there was only a light #northerly #breeze and so riding your #bike in cool dry conditions is actually quite pleasurable.

  2. You can tell that we’re in #November. There has been thick #CloudCover all day, with #Rain coming down over significant periods of the day. It has been dark and dank and although sunset was only about ten minutes ago, it has been feeling like dusk for a couple of hours already. My #BikeLights got put to good use today as did my #Overtrousers. It’s also lucky that I have two on the front and two on the back since one ran out of power en route.

Whelp, here's one major down side....

If I break a spoke I have to take the whole battery hub off to replace it......

I'm not looking forward to how hard it was to get on in the first place.

But I still love these lights!

  4. We are touched by the kindness and generosity of Outbound Lighting. Having such extraordinary bike lights isn’t possible for everyone who bikes, including many youth participants in our cycling education activities. But it is for two more, thanks to Outbound's thoughtful gift on April 13 of a Portal Wireless Helmet Light outboundlighting.com/collectio and a Trail Evo Wireless Handlebar Light. outboundlighting.com/products/ Muchas gracias, Outbound! And BTW, Penny sure is a cute shop dog: outboundlighting.com/pages/abo.

  5. Sometimes people don’t use the bike lights legally required in their locale because they don’t know the laws (e.g., for California, bikemonterey.org/wp-content/up). Other times, there are other reasons—in some cases, it’s that their family budget hasn’t allowed purchasing a reliable light.

Our gratitude to Shawna Wagner and Patrick Presco of NiteRider for contributing on April 13 a Lumina Micro 650 Front Bike Light. niterider.com/products/6784-lu This allowed us to gift the light to a court-referred Salinas Valley teen participating in Bicycling Monterey’s project Alternatives to Fines for Traffic Citations. Thank you, NiteRider! niterider.com/

  6. When a widely renowned Monterey County business, Light & Motion, ceased operations this year after 35 years, we became eager to know of other reliable lights for cycling.

That’s why we checked out the new KOM Cycling Quick Release 1000 lumen light. We do a lot of night riding, including on dark rural roads, and we appreciate this degree of brightness! It's also available as a 350 lumen light. Each has 6 operating modes—3 steady and 3 flashing, including an SOS light.

Concerned about bike light theft while parked? The light is very easy to detach and take with you.

Those of you using Garmin & Wahoo devices will appreciate that these lights come with the needed hardware to ensure compatibility with Garmin and Wahoo mounts and computers.

  7. In order to compensate for the missed couple of days of cycling during the week, owing to snow, I went on a #Night #Ride today. This enabled me to get used to #riding in the #dark. On my usual route, there are some fairly quiet and hence secluded and #unlit stretches, where #BikeLights are essential although it’s still very difficult to spot pedestrians in dark clothing (and also their dogs). Still, no close encounters today.

  9. Now that we have darker evenings, here is a great guide to the cycle lighting regulations in the UK from the excellent team at Cycling UK, the cycling charity.

The rules might not make much sense in places, but they are explained well.

  12. As promised, here are some shots of the most recent completed iteration of my #BikeLights project

  13. Forgot to post pics here of the finished #BikeLights project, so that's forthcoming. Currently working on a simple #flask #webapp that takes in a #gnucash database and outputs some helpful pages to tune my budgets and better understand my spending patterns.

I recently came back to gnucash after trying #ynab for a year. While the double entry accounting was sorely missed, I do miss the presentation of the data that ynab excelled in. Looking to strike a better balance with three modifications.
