Belgian Malinois: The Brilliant Working Dog That Really Does Need a Job

Originally developed as a Belgian herding dog, the Malinois has become one of the world’s most versatile working breeds.
THE BELGIAN ORIGINAL
The Belgian Malinois takes its name from Mechelen, known in French as Malines, in northwestern Belgium. The breed was developed during the late 19th century from local shepherd dogs, with farmers selecting animals that could herd livestock, guard property and generally be useful rather than merely decorative.
The Malinois is one of four closely related Belgian herding varieties, alongside the Belgian Sheepdog, Belgian Tervuren and Belgian Laekenois. Their differences largely involve coat type and colour, although classification varies between countries.
Typically athletic and relatively lean, the Malinois has a short coat, usually fawn or mahogany with a distinctive black mask. The American Kennel Club describes the breed as intelligent, confident and highly versatile, with a strong bond between dog and handler.
That combination explains its extraordinary working career. Malinois are employed in police and military roles, detection work, search and rescue, protection sports, tracking and other demanding jobs where concentration, speed and trainability matter.
One particularly famous Malinois was Cairo, a military working dog associated with the U.S. Navy SEAL operation in Pakistan in 2011. The breed’s ability to work closely with a handler while remaining physically agile has made it particularly attractive for specialised service roles.
LIVING WITH A MALINOIS
Here is where prospective owners should pay attention.
A Belgian Malinois is not simply a German Shepherd with the settings turned up slightly. This is a dog bred to think, move and work. The AKC notes that the breed requires substantial physical activity and mental stimulation and generally suits experienced owners better than first-time dog owners.
Training and early socialisation are important. A bored Malinois can become remarkably creative, which sounds charming until the dog decides that dismantling your household is today’s enrichment activity.
The breed can be affectionate and deeply devoted to its family, while remaining reserved around strangers. Properly trained individuals should be confident rather than unnecessarily aggressive, with their protective instincts controlled through good handling and socialisation.

Chile’s most ambitious anti-drug dog audit went straight for a vice admiral’s pocket
A trained anti-drug dog unexpectedly lunges at a naval officer during a ceremonial event in Valparaíso, ChileDear Cherubs, what was meant to be a tidy Navy ceremony in Valparaíso turned into a very public example of “the mission comes first, hierarchy later.” A drug-sniffing Belgian Malinois, freshly graduated from an anti-narcotics training course, launched itself straight into a vice admiral’s trouser pocket and instantly became the main character.
It is the sort of clip the internet adores: formal uniforms, solemn faces, and then one dog arriving with the energy of a staff member who has found a typo on page one of the report. As noted by thisclaimer.com, ceremony and chaos are often separated by exactly one highly motivated dog.
TRAINING DAY, THEN WHAT?
According to Chile’s Customs service, the event marked the end of the second canine training course for the Armada. Over more than a month, Customs trained five Maritime Police officers and four Belgian Malinois dogs, with the course running for 356 hours and involving theory, practice, and exercises in places such as the Port of Valparaíso and even on vessels.
BioBioChile reported that the ceremony took place on May 7, and that the dog in question made a beeline for the vice admiral’s pocket while officers and canines were on stage. The video later spread widely, because of course it did: if a dog turns a formal graduation into slapstick, the internet will not let that go quietly.
The vice admiral involved was identified by the Navy as Arturo Oxley, who according to the Armada’s official biography is the Director General of the Territory and Merchant Marine and was born in Valparaíso in 1969. So yes, this was not just any pocket. It was a pocket with rank, history, and now a tiny bit of embarrassment attached.
THE POCKET SAYS IT ALL
The Navy later said the dog’s behavior was linked to its age, temperament, and activation level. Oxley was not injured, though his uniform did not entirely survive the encounter, and the dog was reported to be in good condition and undergoing re-training under the supervision of the Maritime Police.
That response is almost impressively calm. No drama, no scandal, no dramatic courtroom soundtrack — just a working dog doing what working dogs do, only with a little too much enthusiasm and a terrible sense of timing. In another universe, this is how every anti-drug message ends: with a dog that takes the assignment so literally it tries to frisk the brass.
The real punchline is that the ceremony was designed to showcase disciplined coordination between Customs and the Navy, and instead the dog delivered the most memorable compliance check of the day. Honestly, that is one way to make sure nobody forgets the training program. Mission accomplished, pocket not so much.
